Bike dies at stops

Hope it all goes well, and please recognize my first post as an off the cuff attempt at humour...
Thank you..I need to have my mind taken off tomorrow.
Not worried about surgery, just being in hospital with Clovid

Im going through a similar situation. Yesterday I finally took the carbs off and stripped them. Perhaps there was some restriction in the removable idle jet. So I thought maybe I found the problem. Idles fine, when cold it is better as soon as it gets hot noting but
missing and backfiring when throttle closed. Open throttle past 1/8 or so and away you go. Fine out on the road once you get
to 1/4 throttle. At small openings just awful.
I hate being a parts changer but next has to be a number 3 slide instead of a 3 1/2.

Is that with Premiers?

Idles well when cold, and really it shouldn't, playing up when hot? Could be the idle jet is too big or and the air screw needs screwing out more than the usuall 2 to 1.5 turns. I would reckon the slide is okay if the motor runs clean after 1/8. Do the free stuff first.

Yes premiers. Ive done all the cheap stuff. If at low speed you run add choke it smooths out. If you set the air screw too lean or too rich no change. Needle is full rich. Plugs are clean.
Starts hard.

You know about the pilot jet issue? Frequently supplied with #17s and usually need #19s. Dya know what you’ve for in them?

sounds pilot related, 17's can be a problem. Stacks on the carbs or straight into the air filter?
May not be the throttle valve, I'm assuming you've just lifted the slides with the twist grip to check for any spitting or bogging?

Bike dies at stops

Another ride today. Gave her a bit of flogging and ran the revs up to 6500rpm.

Idle was a lot more stable, although it does vary a little. Coming to a stop it may drop to about 800 but it doesn't die. A blip will bring it back to about 1000rpm. Considering these are original Amal bodies with new anodized slides I don't expect perfection. I did kill it at one stop light but that was my fault.

I'm gong to call it good for now.

Air leak?

Don't think so, o rings good and I dont torque too much attaching
the carbs to the inlets.

Onder, you got at least two of us saying it sounds like pilot jets are too small... what yer got in ‘em...?

Idle jets are standard two ring...17.
Im waiting on 19s. Shipping is a bit slow right now.
At this point Im sticking to one change at a time. When I get the 19s Ill try it. Then will try another suggestion
which is 106.5 needle jets. Then 3 on the slide instead of 3.5.
A lot of waiting for bike stuff since The Great Panic got going. Patience is a virtue.
Thx to all for responses.

Yes I think the slides do more than the jets at the small throttle openings. Hopefully by friday I can have at it.

OK got in the 19 idle jets. Test ride now that the rain has moved off.
When cold the bike is FINE. After 8 miles and into town a quarter mile or
less of traffic , temps cool at 58F it goes back to its evil self. Won't settle down
tries to quit if idle goes below 1300. And quit it did. Had to, of course, pull
off to the side to get it on the stand and started. Off again barely keeping it going
by high 1500 idle. Half a mile of this torture (incomers have returned) and up a steep
hill home. Once you are at 1/4 throttle and above it flies. A mile home and it sat and
idled flawlessly.
It doesn't seem to respond all that much to the air screw. Half a turn either way there is
no huge change. You go further sure it will quit .
When cool it felt great no problems. It really seems to be related to heat.

Next up: No. 3 slide. Ill try whatever but it sure is puzzling.
