Oops. I seem to have dropped in on an Amal Carb Club lovefest.

I wuvs my Amals! :D What's not to like about 50 mpg, a smooth stable 1000 rpm idle, and one kick cold starts? And in 8,000 miles they haven't "gone out of tune" at all.

On my 750 anyway. So far I haven't had much luck with the resleeving on my 850. For some reason it leaned them way out and I'm having to go through and reject the carbs richer all across the range. Also the right carb is running leaner than the left, at least on the idle circuit. It's acting like it either has an air leak or a clogged pilot circuit. So off it comes again.

Disappointing to say the least. On the 750, the resleeving worked great with no jetting changes required. :?

I have to agree with the Amal Mk1 being a good carb for the Norton. Years ago I thought I was having carb problems and bought a pair Mk2s but they did not help. Turned out the problem was a worn camshaft and after rebuilding the engine and head, the rebuilder could not get the Mk2s to work satisfactorily using many different main jet sizes and needle settings. I brought him the old Mk1s and after installing them the bike started and ran perfectly with stock jetting. They've been on the bike for many years and never have given me problems, though I don't put many miles on the Norton.

I have posted this before, but had my AMAL 932s sleeved in 1998 by Gaylord, now retired. He did a stainless sleeve over the slide. Mine have been running great since then even with over 25,000 miles added. My fuel consumption is between 50 and 60 mpg - combat engine.
