Best value exhaust pipes

Thanks for the tips; got things pretty well evened up with a little judicious pressure, and the kickstarter clears the pipe nicely.

The challenge now is to fabricate isolastic muffler mounts for the Decibels to attach to the Dunstall rear sets plates. Most pics I’ve seen have the “Full Power” 2-1-2 header, which positions the silencers further aft.

The cover of Feb’72 Motor Cycle World magazine features the “Mindbending” Dunstall 810, which has Decibels and roadster-style headers with the Dural plates. I’d dearly love to find a high-res print of that cover to study the mount details more clearly.

The Dunstall 810 was two into one into two.

The Dunstall 810 was two into one into two.
I’ve seen that too, however the magazine cover I’m referring to shows two shots of a red Dunstall 810 with a balanced two into two exhaust system.

Not VIP yet and can’t post pics, but pretty easy to look up.

Last week I finally received a pair of unbalanced 750 pipes from Andover Norton, for an 850 MK2a I've built for a friend. The delay was down to them using a new manufacturer. The quality of the pipe work, welding, & plating is some of the best I have seen in well over forty years. The fit is also good, the left pipe just needed a bit of tweeking, but I have never found any exhaust pipes that just fit perfectly, due as much as anything to the variations from bike to bike.

Martyn.
Are these the ones you bought Martyn?

I recently finished a 69S. One of the pipes touched the side cover and the other was close and this was after I relieved the side cover, so it sat closer to the frame.

Out of desperation, I tightened both in the head very tight and pulled on the other end. I pulled each to twice as far out as I wanted them to end up. To my shock and amazement, it worked. There was no indication that I was reforming the pipe bends, but I certainly did. I have since corrected the timing side OEM pipe on my MKIIA (black cap) and on a 72 Roadster the same way.

Of course, there is risk so don't complain if you try it and it goes sideways!

I was very blessed when I built my Commando/Featherbed back in the early 80s I had an old exhaust shop family owned and the 2 brothers were both experienced with making one off exhaust systems as they had an old school mandle bending machine and I took my Noroton over there, Ian said it's been sometime since he made headers for a bike and he wanted to do it, he did everything by eye, bend, fit, bend, fit after I told him how I wanted the pipes tuck right into the bottom frame rails, I watch his handy work and was a great experience watching a true tradesman at work, I wanted the pipes bent close to the frame rails and up swept at the rear.
He only took 15 minute to bend the shape I wanted and he made the pipe where it fits to the flange out of bigger pipe with the flang put on my flanges, fitted the bent pipes inside the flange pipe and welded it on to the flange pipe, so after 30 minute he had made my full straight through exhaust system and both pipes at the last upswept bend were both in line with each other side, it was such a pleasure for him to make them he charged me $20 to make and next door to his shop was a just open electro platers so chromed next day at a cost of $20 to me, I rode the bike for a week with the straight throughs till I got a set of mufflers then cut the pipes down after the last up swept, the mufflers were also up swept.
Well that was over 40 years ago and I am still running those header pipes, but had gone through 2 sets of mufflers since, I am running cocktail shakers from Lowbrows with min baffles, they are short mufflers and upswept just the way I like them and the bike runs so well with them and put out a great sound, the mufflers cost more than the pipes to get made.
Ian also made a set of SS exhaust header for my old 81 Triumph Thunderbird and a exhaust header for my mate's AJS 500, Ian has since past away but the exhaust shop is still owned by his family, they since got rid of that big mandle bending machine long ago and lost a true exhaust bender who knew how to bend pipes.
The headers are old and have brazed up one small rust hole in one but they are still hanging in there, but if I got a set made up today the cost would be high and finding someone who knew what they were doing and the machine that didn't crush the pipes while bending, but really the best thing would be to have the bike there and get the headers made for the bike, then there be no problems with fitting.
Pic of both bikes with Ian's handy work, $20 for the Norton headers and $40 for the Triumph headers as they were stainless steel pipes.

So by "isolastic muffler mounts" you mean rubber mounts?

Yes, the rubber mounts like the head steady ones.

Appreciate the feedback from all; I mocked up the mounts in 16ga mild steel, and a good buddy is bending a pair to the same dimensions in 11ga SS.

Will finally break down and spring for VIP membership and post pics soon.

Happy holidays!

Since my name was brought up I'll give my full impression/information. I am a dealer for JRC Engineering, Wassel, AN, Tri-Spark, AMAL, and several others. EMGO only sells in large batches, and I am not a dealer for EMGO. I get my EMGO products from three places: Wassel, JRC Engineering, and Amazon.

EMGO products range from crap to excellent. The EMGO Roaster tanks are superior and IMHO, way better than originals. Other than Viking Exhaust, EMGO unbalanced Roadster exhaust pipes are superior to any others I've found. EMGO Roadster side covers are excellent, but the oil tank cover does not have the standoffs. EMGO peashooters are excellent as well, but they are VERY loud. Most EMGO electrical parts are crap as are fenders. The handlebars are at least as good as originals.

Similarly, Wassel products range between crap and excellent. When I receive something from them that is crap, I trash it. They are today's Genuine Lucas - IMHO only a fool buys LUCAS-like products today. Same for Girling and Hepolite.

I could not be happier that AN exists, stays well stocked, will answer questions/help, and generally supports the community. I get most Norton parts, except those above, from AN and I bought out the Old Britts AN stock.

All that said, I have no EMGO pipes or peashooters for sale right now and I've quit adding stock since I have $92k worth right now and no one is buying.
Greg, I have looked at the Viking exhaust website a few times since you sent me the link. Do you have any personal experience with their 2 into 1 exhaust, or even their unbalanced systems? Do you deal In their products? My 850 has the stock balanced pipes which need chroming, but I may replace them instead. Thanks.

I don't have any experience with them, but everyone who ever commented to me on them says that they are very expensive but worth it.
