I'm considering buying a norman Hyde big bore kit from a mate as he's changed to a Neil Beading kit
The bores and pistons are good but it was smoking like a pig (yep I know it's usual for a triple especially a big bore )
The pistons are basically modified 650 triumph pistons, What's the best rings available?
Particularly the oil control rings

Hastings with a 3 piece oil ring. If you can find them.
It'll definitely be 3 piece oil control rings 👍👍
His bike ran like a champ apart from the smoke
I'll look into Hastings rings I think I've used them in the past but can't remember now

To me, Hastings were the go to for Triumph and Norton, but they quit making rings for Norton so I started using Hepolite which are made by Federal Mogul. As I understand it, they were the original rings. The difference today is the addition of the expander spring inside the oil ring. Many here hate that spring because it makes getting the oil ring in harder, but once in, IMHO, the rings are excellent.

Do you know who makes the pistons? That might determine the rings required.

Those certainly look like Hepolite oil rings. When you buy Hepolite pistons and rings sets today, you get JCC pistons and Federal Mogul rings. Hepolite is another name Wassell took over, and I've been very happy with them

Those look like one piece oil rings? Correct?

Do you happen to know which Norman Hyde kit it is as it's a Triumph block with the casting/part number on it and not Hyde's own 850 block as that has less fins.

I don't know
I'm assuming it's an early kit that that was fitted with oversized liners and modified 650 pistons
I've seen the Hyde made barrels they look a lot more substantial

Yes the kits including my own Hyde 1000cc (973) kit has modified AE Hepolite 650 pistons.
