Battery

Agreed - much better . I leave my battery tender plugged in also , but I have my garage right here with power available . Ideally the parasitic draw should be less than 1 ma , not 10-11 ma. or more that some are getting . Those instruments should have been rejected at Norton , but alas we have a much worse problem on our hands now !

From the Norton Shop Manual:
Yuasa YTZ14S
220 CCA
I'm still using the Yuasa. Only got 2 years out of the first one, but the bike spent 18 months of that at a dealership off tender. Current one has over 3 years and 9k on it. On tender always. If I leave it off for a week, it starts, but my digital display freaks out. Freezes. Trip resets to zero. Pretty happy with it.

I have number 21 of the SE bikes. When the battery was changed it was done (not by me) without removing the tank. Does anyone know how this is done?

The battery tray is in a pocket beneath and between the frame and rear of the tank.
If the previous owner replaced the battery without removing the tank, he must be a Mensa candidate and a genius.

The tank has to be removed to replace the battery.

I just replaced my junk and unreliable Shorai LFX 18A1-BS12 with a new LFX 19A4-BS12.
The 18A in my Dominator was about 2.5 years old and from about 10-12 months old would never hold a charge even while on the charger.
The 18A in my Commando is nearly 4 years old and is always on a charger will strain with “click click click” on the first 1-3 attempts even with letting the head light warm up the battery and watching the volt meter in the gauge to make sure it’s at least 12.5+ volts before cranking.

The new 19A I installed in my Dominator Sunday is dimensionally smaller yet stronger. We’ll see how this one last and works over a period of time. If it fails I’ll either install a cut off switch or go to a different battery.

Also: I replaced the charger as well on the Domi. Shorai changed the the charge cables.

I’ll explain how to swap the battery without removing the tank if you can explain how this card trick is done.

Having done battery swaps on my 961, I‘m gonna have to say that is simply not possible. Reckon they were pulling your leg mate.

Does he mean "CHARGED" and not changed ?? There is a charging plug at the top of the left hand rear shock , tucked in behind for charging the battery .

Did you have any issues with the new Shorai charging cable Vodoo? I find they wont bend at all where you need to. I just put a Shorai on my KTM and the charging cable is unusable.

They used shrink tube on the charging cable which doesn’t allow it to flex much at all.
I was able to bend it to fit but using a heat gun to soften the shrink tube and then ran the cable under the battery hold down rubber strap.
Time will tell if it stays put.

Thank you. Im not aware of the Deltran Charger, does it work on the Shorai battery?

They make a LiFeP04 Lithium Iron switchable charger , I just bought one . For 4 + years I have been using a regular Deltran Battery Tender charger on my Shorai without any problems. I will try to find it and Post a link.

Tony, were you still using the SAE connector with the Shorai?

In the 3 years I had my 961 I replaced the original Yuasa after 9 months then that one after a year then gave up with expensive Yuasa's and fitted a cheap Lucas I think it was which worked just as well. Batteries on 961's have to be tip top otherwise the engine will crank over but not fire.
Regards
I had a similar issue so went over to a cheaper MOTOBATT battery, MBTZ14S (190CCA 11.2AH) a few years ago and it seems fine.
