I need some advice from some of you folks about wheather or not to use a battery. I have a 71 with no Elect. starter , Bought a podtronics regulator and a Pazon electronic ignition. The bike had the large blue capacitor on it. Do I understand correctly that this is used in lieu of a battery? So far I've had no luck searching for info on how to do this. The Pazon claims it will work fine at 8 vdc and without a battery. Any suggestions, pros or cons?

Rich,

Yuasa makes very small, 5amphr batteries that are sealed, RGT. Not gellcell. If you like to run lights all the time, then it's probably a good idea to have a small battery. Check the Yuasa site.

The stock RM21 Lucas alternators (120Watt( don't put out a lot of juice at low rpm. The three-phase RM24 with electronic regulator or Sparx three-phase will put out 190-200Watts and reasonable current at low rpm. Even with the three-phase, lights and electronic ignition is asking a lot when idling at a light. Even a small sealed battery will help to even out the power supply.

The blue capacitors deteriorate, so unless you have a newly manufactured one, it may not perform well.

I remember when the Mity-Max capacitors were all the rage for Brit chopper builders. I watched many of them wear themselves out kicking to get them started.

In my experience it has been quite tedious waiting for friends who chose no battery to attempt to start thier bikes. It is worse yet to be drawn in to the attempt and get your leg tired also. If you wish to do this without a battery park on hills.
