I have been using the Battery tender Jr for years on my other bikes. However, when I try to use it on the Norton, I have to either fully disconnect all the leads from the battery first or disconnect the fuses to get it to charge. My Norton is still a positive ground setup.

What do you guys do? Is there an easier work around? I would really like to permanently install the Battery Tender Jr. quick connects but there is no point right now.

Re: Battery Tender Jr - Why do I have to disconnect the batt

Does the electrical system still have the normal Zener diode (and rectifier)? The Zener can bleed-off the charging current when connected during charging so it can prevent the battery reaching its fully charged state.

Re: Battery Tender Jr - Why do I have to disconnect the batt

Is this also true if I use the plug/socket part number 06-2666

Me too. I just use the "shaver" plug and my Batt Tender charges fine, positive gnd.

I have never thought about using the shaver plug... What did you use to connect the charger to the shaver plug?

I got rid of my old zener. I have the podtronics now.

Have you tried disconnecting the Podtronics unit before charging?
Does it still have the 2MC capacitor connected?

Yes, the capacitor is still connected....I think. I didn't disconnect it. :-)

If I disconnect the podtronics fuse and the main fuse, then I can charge. If I leave either of them connected, it won't fully charge. I just plugged a couple wires into the shaver outlet and the charger went from Red to Green Flashing. It doesn't do that when I connect it to the battery with the fuses disconnected. I will let you know.

I pull the fuse on my bike except when I'm using it, so I just use the clip leads. Pulling the fuse is easy enough, at least on mine, it's right above the battery below the seat.

I don't know why, but pluggin the charger into the Shaver Socket worked! Thanks guys!

What kind of plug is that anyway and where can I get one? I'd like to properly wire a charging plug instead of just sticking bare wires into the socket.

Those plugs are pretty rare and sell for a good amount when they show up

Does anyone know what they are called?

Re: Battery Tender Jr - Why do I have to disconnect the batt

Someone has reproduced these "shaver plugs" recently. I saw the plugs and sockets being sold together somewhere. In the past it has been very hard to locate the plugs (very non-standard). I still have my original plug that came with the bike. I just got into Battery Tenders recently (when I bought the Harley) and the next step with the Norton would be to rewire in a 4 position fuse panel and probably another relay so the battery is "alone" with the key off (charging system disconnected). There is not much need for a Battery Tender on non electric start bikes though.

There was also an ebayer named bsanut selling them for about the same price. I asked if he would separate them but he would not. Only sold as a set.

Eurotrash has replicas.

Re: Battery Tender Jr - Why do I have to disconnect the batt

Good stuff. I do have the OEM Socket and Plug. I'm just looking for a good way to connect the charge to the socket.

Re: Battery Tender Jr - Why do I have to disconnect the batt

My '72 is plugged into a Battery Tender now with a green light showing. Should not be a problem with zener bleeding off current as the charger current is pretty low anyway.

My battery tender came with one of these plug :
Battery Tender Jr - Why do I have to disconnect the battery?

I just keep it permanently attached to the battery and tuck it up behind a side cover when I'm out riding.
