Hi Guys
Should the battery terminals be facing the oil tank .... or away from
The "L" shaped support bar would indicate to me the terminals should face the oil tank .... but it just looks wrong as the terminals normally face out...
But the L shaped top support bar will short them out (RGM supplied) if left unmodified??

The metal bar goes right by the terminals. :eek: Yeaaaahhh..... an engineering marvel:rolleyes:

Oops.

I searched it so many years ago. Couldn’t bring myself to put the terms next to the oil tank either. Just me being over cautious. Rubber pad glued on the oil tank too.

By modern day standards its just wrong placing the terminals inboard and against a metal tank, So there will definitely be a rubber pad against the oil tank just in case
 
I have mine facing the side cover, been like that since I bought it in 78. Mine is a 73. I have styrofoam blocks holding the battery in place, terminals are covered up.
 
I use double sided Velcro straps to keep most of my batteries secured.

Adjustable, simple, secure, no danger of shorting and cheap as chips!
 
I ended up with a small battery from my KTM dirtbike, held in place by a harness made of tie wraps, seems to work. The original set up seemed a naff.

This. I have two of these picture hanging thingy's mounted to the fore & aft of the battery tray with the long velcro strap looped between them and over the battery

I wanted to mount the horn and PODtronics on the back of the ham can and that left no room for the standard battery straps and bar. I don't like them anyway so I made this. There is a foam pad under and behind the battery and on the side of the bracket next to the battery. Next time I'll braze a bolt into the battery carrier so I can use a wing nut to release the battery but it's easy enough now with wrenches. The bracket is simply a piece of steel 1" wide 3/32" thick that I formed in a vice with some hammering and then powder coated.
