It's not too bad. I had to remove the battery box from my Mk II 850 about a year ago so I could drill some holes in it (don't ask!). You'll have to remove the oil tank and the air filter/air box, plus the battery (duh) and anything else you may have mounted in there. Then you remove it from the front. I don't remember if I had to take the carbs off. I'm thinking I was able to leave them on.
If you're very careful and patient, the battery box can be removed without removing the oil tank. It's tricky but it can be done without forcing or bending any part of the tray...and you can do it without scratching up the frame.
If by chance you're running FCR carbs, they can stay on, only the air filters need to be removed.
Thanks for the information. I am running a single Mikuni with an attached K&N filter so the original air box is already gone. I need to pull the battery box so I can fabricate a battery tie down. Thanks again.
A couple shortened right angle wheel spokes with new threads rolled on and the corresponding nipples used as nuts (upside down) works a treat. And you don't need to pull the battery tray to fit them.
