Avon Roadrider Universal vs dedicated rear fitment

There may be some resistance to the wide rims due to fitment. If you want to stay stock or relatively stock, the wider rims wont do.
Not really a case of "dont look right" rather the additional things needing doing so you can use them.
Well, this is the case for me.

Additional things that need doing? Like what exactly? Regarding the "must look stock" argument, you probably wouldn't even notice until it was pointed out to you.

Actually I'm all for following Avon's recommendations if if fitting new rims, provided you dead set on running only that tire brand/model .
My current rims fall within their requirements so I'm not about to change them. The advantage at road speeds is likely not measureable.

And then there is an entire world of other tire companies out there, some with very good products.
It wasn't very long ago that Roadriders had serious problems with delamination, sometimes within days of fitment, so they have not exactly been perfection.

No, you've got a tyre and rim combo that is "acceptable" rather than ideal. There is a big difference on the road. Likely not noticeable. Sorry for the quick snort of derision, but I like to deal with the reality rather than the "I would think".

I have been through about 25 of these tyres over quite a few years and I've never had a problem with any of them, so the problems must have been some time ago.

Still, I suppose if we only dealt with facts on this forum, rather than supposition, it would be slim pickings indeed.

Onder,
You may have fit issues with the WM-4 rim with an early 750 front fender or a cNw type front fender using the 100/90 19" Avons. Here is a very old thread: https://www.accessnorton.com/NortonCommando/advice-on-replacement-rims.12087/page-3
850 front fenders are not a problem. Look at the profile change for tire contact patch. You may need the photobucket fix to see the pictures.
And like Ken pointed out to you: Regarding the "must look stock" argument, you probably wouldn't even notice until it was pointed out to you.
Cheers,
Thomas

But then I have never paid anyone to mount a tire on my Norton.

I just carry a couple short bars and I know how to NOT pinch the tube...Jim
And me. But then there are some who's tool kit consists of a cell phone and a credit card.
Cheers,
Thomas

So true, we would lose most of your ramblings which are quite amusing at times! :)

Show me some of these ramblings. I write stuff based on my experience and observations. You, on the other hand, use a lot of supposition. For example, saying that I need an "RV" cam for my bike, showing a complete misunderstanding of what I have and what I use it for. Cover it with a smiley face and all the bullshit disappears, does it?
If you can't put forward a convincing argument, then don't post.

Then I stand corrected. If I could get WM4 in SS Id probably try it. Just prefer the stock look .

I've seen how you use it Ken, you posted a video.
An RV Cam would be just the ticket.

As the old journalist's saying goes, "Never let the facts stand in the way of a good story!" ;)

Or in this case, rather than read and educate oneself, just label the information supposition if it doesn't fit your rigid view.

This is it what it looked like when the Roadriders started coming apart.
One of my Vincent friends had the same thing happen as did a couple of his aquaintances. His tire was near new when it failed.
Concours' tire in the link has 4 k miles on, still a decent amount of tread left, however it is unsafe to use. Since it's a 120/18, it's a dedicated rear and should do 6 k easily enough, which it would have except for the delamination.
Yeah, they had some bad batches. They seem to have it under control now.

Seems to me that you're the one telling tales. Like I asked before, quote one of my posts which could be classified as bullshit or supposition. You conveniently ignored that one. When you run out of facts, fairly quickly I might add, you just make out I'm not quite straight.

Put up or shut up. I'm sick of being trashed for this shit.

I think we covered that the other day re your years of posting about how bad your business is ( I would only sell it to someone I hate...) and now it's for sale it's a " solid little business"

Anyway, you got this going with your negative comment about the forum in general ( and my post specifically) being full of supposition rather than fact. That was a nasty comment about a great forum.
Jerry and Les plus a great many contributors have put a lot into this forum, it's a very good source of factual Norton info.
If something gets posted that isn't factual it gets corrected pretty quickly.

But this thread was about tires...

Carry on

Glen,
Was this happening on the 18" size tires only? I have never seen this problem on the Universal 19", which I have my opinion and experience with. I changed out many sets of these tires. In the province of Nova Scotia all motor vehicles must get a safety done every year to get the new license sticker for their license plate. Though I live in Ontario this is reality for some. I stated my reasons for dedicated front fitment and I need a tire that works in the rain. I travel long distances and I can't choose Blue bird sunny days to get to where I am going. I just have to grin and bear it, when it happens to rain. I would be very interested in also testing the Conti classics if I could find them. Even if I did, I am not sure the price would be close to the Avon's. The Avon's did have a price hike.

Thomas, I have only witnessed the problem with 18" Roadriders and at that it was a few years ago. It may have just been one bad batch.
I've used up several 18" Avon Roadriders since then and had no problems.
I've also worn out several of 19" on the Commando without a problem, mostly changing them as you do, especially if the front is getting old.
Right now the front is quite fresh in time and wear, but the rear is gone so I might get lazy and just change the rear.

I will probably try Jim's suggestion of the Avon Cobra.

Glen

I'm just curious, we all know the world is round because someone said it is but has anyone actually spoken to Avon to confirm what they say in their online recommended rim sizes ?

That’s a loaded question. You clearly think something isn’t right. Care to share your thinking??

What are the implications of using a narrower than recommended rim? I run 100/90 Roadriders front and rear on stock WM2 rims.

Glen, I had this problem with a 100 90 19 Roadrider fitted to the rear, approx 6 years ago.
I junked the tyre and have used many since with no further problems.
