I purchased a set of points off ebay for my 73 commando. The spring for the movable point shorts out against the screw used to hold the secondary adjustment plate. Took me a while to find the problem as it doesn't
happen all the time. I thought I read here that you can use automotive points from a chevy as a replacement ? Does anyone know if that's true and if it is what year chevy points will work?
I'd like to be able to go to the auto parts store today instead of waiting days to get them from motorcycle suppliers.
Thanks

Re: Automotive point for Commando?

Hi Art

Dont know about auto points but I had very poor luck using some Japanese made aftermarket points, which were made as a replacement for the Lucas Norton points. The heels wore down at an alarming rate, even tho lube was applied.
This caused all sorts of grief on an long trip. On arrival back home I searched for and found several sets of NOS Lucas points, enough to circumnavigate the globe many times. Lucas may have made some shakey electrical items, but their contact points are very high quality. From my memory of auto points, most were quite low quality and short lived. The Lucas items will do a huge mileage with a little touch up here and there.
It might take a bit of searching to find some, but it is worth the effort.

Thanks Glen, these are made in Japan points and I suspected they were going to be trouble when I put them in. The contact points would not meet flat against each other no matter what I did to correct them.
I saved the old lucas point , maybe I'll throw them on just to get the bike on the road for a shake down cruse. Maybe someone will come up with the automotive replacements.

page 7 of ; prepareing the 1973 TRIUMPH 750 Twin engine for use in Dirt Track , T.T. , and road race Competition , on the link above . :D

Theres a points assembly made by Bendix listed there . Mentions removeing auto advance . BUT , as thats a seperate component , that may be optional .
Noteing the Triumph points cam rotates opposite hand . Wether theres a Norton oriented assembly available ( then ) is a good question .
Youll have me indexing Bendix part numbers next .

Heres the LINK : http://www.billymegawatt.com/uploads/6/ ... racing.pdf AGAIN . scroll down for Contact Points . or Peruse .
Not being made elsewhere , theres commonality in component supply , in part .

The Tufnol or Paxilon , the redish Brown cloth impregnated C.B. heel ( Like in a real ignition ; a MAGNETO :D ) arnt prone to melting like Nylon Tripe .

4 C A points WERE this material . Theres O.M. ones about . A possability theyre adaptable to the 6 CA / 10 CA assembly ?

" Matt, got it "

THATS not what it said a minute ago . :x :P

Hymph .

" Fibre heel points
Fed up with poor quality reproduction points that don’t fit, last or align properly?

I was, and as a result have remanufactured old style, top quality points with the original Fibre heels, right diameter Tungsten contacts, correct spring tension and perfect alignment.

As they were in the 1930’s, 40’s, 50’s, 60's and 70's. "

when I first saw your post it didn't show the link, when I went back after I replied to you the link appeared so I changed my reply. :)

Cool - makes me want to take the Trispark out and put the points back! OK, not really but I do have a question, I see the points listed on the site but which ones are correct for the Norton distributer?

Just got a REPLY from the Lad : " Spencer , What's the Lucvas number? "

I bought some more NOS 600600271 Lucas breaker points yesterday on ebay, $14 per set.
