The solution to my search for a small onboard tool kit for my MK3 turned out to be an old Ray Ban case. When I am going on any kind trip I like to bring lots (and lots) of tools. Around town though I wanted to have just a few very basic tools that would always be on the bike just in case. I finally came up with this kit that fits inside an old Ray Ban case I had lying around. The case fits perfectly between the rear fender and the frame.

I am still looking for an adjustable end wrench small enough to fit. The wad of silver duct tape contains spare fuses.

Nice! Seems like it wasn't that long ago I always carried some change for a phone call! Easy to be stranded without it, so I'd make sure and have a few dimes stashed. Those days are long gone. Looks like you got the major stuff covered, zip ties are always good to have.

A brand new MK-3 should have a plastic tray. A 36 year old MK-3 should have a Ray Ban case full of cheap Harbor Freight tools :D

good idea: I like the fact that you have a pair of universal pliers; I was caught out recently when the wire between my two coils vibrated off; no pliers, and in trying to put it back on at the side of the road without pliers I managed to break off the connector; which was a pretty cheap one. Luckily a good samaritan with with a tool kit that was better than mine was able to help me out; but from now on I will be packing universal pliers; wire; connectors, fuses, and connectors with me. My 71 has space for a tool kit in the side cover, but it is very restrictive, and I have been trying to find room for tools elsewhere; I tried putting a soft spanner bag under the seat at the back, but no room; I will see if I can duplicate what you have.

Good luck Chris. I had been scratching my head on this deal for quite a while and the bottom line is that there just isn't much spare room on a Commando for even a small tool kit so we have to get creative.

Geez, I don't know what the problem is...I never had trouble finding a place to stash tools!

That was on one of my bucket list trips. Joe and I Left Denver sometime in the middle of June went west to Grand Jct. CO, north to Yellowstone Nat. Park, then west across Idaho and Oregon, picked up highway 101 west of Eugene and rode it all the way to Hwy 1 to San Diego, I think? then back up to Barstow, across the desert to Vegas, across Utah and back home to Denver. By the time we had ridden as far as the mud slides in Big Sur I was sick of curves, I yearned for some good ole interstate! We were on the road for 5 or 6 weeks. We stayed for days in some places where it was too much fun to leave...or had to wait for money to be wired! We were camping and a couple of women came up the morning we were packing to leave and asked if they could watch us pack. Well sure, why? Because there's no way you're gonna get all this stuff on those two motorcycles!

Didn't the Mk III provide a place to store tools in the left side cover? My Mk II has a nice little pocket there where the tool kit is located. Still have original tools and they fit in there pretty well, tight but pretty accessible. All I've ever needed (of course I'm not the greatest mechanic).

I believe the pre-Mk IIIs did (at least 71-74) but the MkIIIs had the tray I referred to earlier. Someone has to have a pic of one. LAB?

I think that trip was in 1983 or 84. BTW, I hadn't ever heard of Humboldt county, California. We pulled into a place in the middle of nowhere called Myers Flat. The place was covered up in women. Every campground within 15 miles or so was full...of women. Joe and I thought we had ran off one of the cliffs in Oregon, died and went to heaven. After a couple of days someone finally told us that they were there waiting on harvest of ah....you know. Most people remember Myers Flat for the big redwood tree that you can drive through...not me! It took a week for us to escape!

A week to escape, hmmm....

Dude, I'm telling you it was tougher that you might think. Think football game, like piling on after the play's over - it was brutal!

I damn near wore out my toolkit.

Oh the girls of harvest time Humbolt! What's that old saying "Girls just want to have fun"!! I miss nor Cal, hey you should be able to find small enough crestent wrenches to fit in there, if you can't pm me your address & I will donate one to you. I have four or five & can spare one. Also if you look you can find left side battery covers that do have a pocket in them.

Anyone come across a sparkplug socket like the one in this kit recently? I've looked but cannot seem to find one now that I need one
