To my shame I can confirm that even with a misplaced rod a Commando can achieve 80mph 
The symptom is a loud intermittent mechanical 'click' accompanied by a rider frown when turning the engine over (damhikt ) - thank goodness for welding rods!
For I was so much younger then, & now not sure who or where I am....
