I have Amal carbs on my 74 850 commando. Above the 3 notches that hold the clip there are 4 tiny lines. What do the lines mean as far as identifying the needle type and intent for use such as to lean or rich mixture??? Pretty sure these are not stock. The slides have 928 3 -1/2 nb3 Right and 923 nb4 3-1/2 on left . I cant find my main jet size--Wrote it down and can't find it at the moment. Will post this eve. What size main jet should go with this needle and slide?? Anyone know--Thanks Mark Cigainero

The"4 ring" ID Amal "928/104" needles would be the stock items for a '74 IIA model, along with 928/107 stepped spray tubes, black plastic airbox and annular discharge black cap/bean can silencers/mufflers.

"3 - 1/2" slides are stock for all 850s.

Disregard the "NB" numbers, as they only identify which particular casting die the slide was originally made from (NB1- NB?) the numbers have no relevance as far as tuning is concerned.

= 220/230

If you have peashooters on instead of the black caps then 230 will be too small, start at 260 and work downwards.

I do not have peashooter style mufflers. I have the beancan annular type. What is a good main jet and needle jet size for that muffler and what notch on the needle===Thanks again for all the help. I will sort all this out soon and stop bugging you guys==Mark C.

But what about the intake side, is that completely stock (black airbox & standard filter?)?
Do your carbs have the stepped (928/107) spray tubes?

So as a starting point for the standard system, (the standard main jet size I already gave you = 220 or 230) and the standard needle jets are 622/122 - 106 with the clip in the 2nd. groove.

LAB, aren't the needles also of different lengths? From previous posts (probably yours) I think the "4 stroke" spray tube went with a short needle, and the cutaway "Norton" tube used a longer needle.

Great pics btw.
