I have been scratching my head wondering just how these work. They were removed on my Triumph so never really played with them.

They are a pair of little slides.
That drop down from inside the main slides, and choke off the air supply.

Nothing very complicated or sophisticated about them.
Almost about exactly like putting your hand over the carby inlets.

For running when warmed up, with no choke required, you pull the lever back,
and it pulls the little slides up out of the way.
That's the theory anyway.
Watch that they don't vibrate down, and give you poor running and huge fuel consumption !
hopethishelps.

That was the thing that confused me. They don't seem to close off much like on a car. Looks to me like the cover less then 1/2 of the opening. Oh well I guess if they work, they work. Like I say my ole Triumph never had them & with out fail started 1st kick every time.
Thanks

Your Commando probably won't need them either.

I don't have them fitted on my 850 and it is ok in warm weather. In winter it is a bit of a bitch because I have to reach down and prod one of the ticklers every now and again to keep it going during the first 20 seconds or less. Very often I am too slow or cant find he tickler. Not a problem for me because I usually go for at least an hours ride without stopping

They are on my '71 At least the cable is hooked to the carbs and bars. I have never moved it or needed it.

And unlike any other choke I've seen or used, this one is "off" when the cable is pulled against the springs.
Which is to say that if you were to take all of the tension off, the choke slides wd come down and the choke will be on.
I only mounted mine at the urging of my mechanic buddy, and cursed the thing for 2 days, until he told me that I was driving around with the choke on.
I find that it helps in a small way, when first starting up. If you don't want to use it, remove the choke slides and springs from the carbs, cap the cable openings somehow.

I use the chokes on the MK2 Amals which are fitted to my Seeley. If your bike is correctly tuned, it should spit back a bit when cold.
