I am removing an Alton starter unit to replace the seal and discs and the clutch assembly will not slide off the crankshaft. Any suggestions? Thanks, and happy new year to everyone! Regards, Dave.

The sprag clutch should slide right off, did you fit the Alton or somebody else?
If someone else maybe they used loctite etc?
It fits the same as an alternator rotor ,so maybe very careful use of a 3 legged puller would remove it

Do you mean the sprag clutch / alternator rotor will not slide off?

It is supposed to be a tight fit on the crankshaft. You may need a puller to get it off.

Check that the sprag keyway is still aligned with the crankshaft keyway. If the crankshaft nut has loosened or sprocket eased further on to the taper at some point then the sprag can spin on the crankshaft and smear the key between the crankshaft and sprag. Removal then becomes a project in itself - damhik. :(

Thanks for your replies. The sprag/alternator came off using the sprocket puller AN 06-4297, 2 - 5/16-24×1 1/2 tension bolts and a 1/4 ball bearing in the center drill of the crankshaft. Thank you Alton for drilling and tapping the holes the correct alignment to use this tool for servicing. I was apprehensive using this style of puller as there are only 2 threads into the piece. I snuggled up the puller then a couple good taps on the compression bolt and it released and tightly slid off successfully. Hee Haw no damage. Thanks again, Dave.
