Anyone going to the Stafford show (30th Carole Nash International Classic Motorcycle Show) in the UK this weekend? http://www.classicbikeshows.com/showindex.asp

In May last year I reported that the French Alton company were in the process of developing a new starter motor conversion kit for the Commando, a comment was made that: "developing".... and "offering for sale" were two different things. However, I can report that production of the new Alton electric starter kit is expected to commence around June-July of this year, as I have received information from Paul Hamon (Alton) who informs me that Alton will be sharing a stand with VINCO and MRC at the Stafford show this weekend (24th & 25th) where they will be showing their range of Alton generators as well as the new Commando electric starter & generator conversion kit.

The main features of the kit are:

Completely new AC generator (alternator).
Outer primary case remains unchanged.
The modification can be completely reversed, as no original parts need to be modified.
3 hour installation time (or 1 hr. for an expert).
Production planned for June-July.
The kit price is expected to be around 1300 Euros

Might be interesting...I can kick start my commando with no problem (so far) but e-start would be nice, especially if you stall the bike at a light! ;) I have inquired about the Old Britts e starter but I do not care to switch to belt drive which is part of their kit. If someone is offering an estart that can essentially use the stock components, I would prefer that. So I'll be loking forward to finding out more about this French kit and if it actually shows up for sale. There's nothing about it that I could find on their website.

Whoever goes better take a LOT of pictures of this rig.

Re: Alton Electric Starter Conversion On Show at Stafford (U

I have some, but I can't show them

I can say it looks slick, but the chaincase must be retained because there is a sprag clutch which I guess needs a bit of lube. The good thing is it comes with a new alternator and very few mods to the inner chaincase and none to the engine cradle (as on the Old Brits / QPD starters). The price is certainely very attractive.

Yes, so have I :(

I believe a new inner chaincase is included in the kit, so no original parts have to be modfied, according to Paul Hamon.

Can you run it with a belt?

Re: Alton Electric Starter Conversion On Show at Stafford (U

COOL! I assume all those "extra" pieces that are in the chaincase are part of the "kit" ? They can count me in for a purchase if it actually works!

Makes me feel good to see chains where they should be. :)

Yes, as far as I'm aware. Although I expect any standard parts such as the clutch assembly and primary chain will not be part of the kit.

Hi,

Anybody know if this kit can be installed on a 75 on ES 850 MK3? Just curious if it's an option?

It appears there is a chain that runs from the starter forward to the sprocket on the crankshaft. So that would indicate there is a different crank sprocket (with 4 rows of teeth) or an additional sprocket bolted to the oem which would also explain why the alternator would have to be different for clearance purposes.

Re: Alton Electric Starter Conversion On Show at Stafford (U

Alton's business is making alternators, so the conversion is basicaly to keep the primary drive as is, remove the Lucas rotor and in its place, put in a sprocket with a sprag clutch for the starter and a new thinner alternator (with most likely more power) By limiting the modifications to the inner primary chaincase, the installation becomes much more simple than any of the others on the market, pricing it at roughly half of the competition makes this a winning combination in my book.

Hi L.A.B.,

Thanks for the link. I already sent them an email months ago about this but never got a reply. I sent another email a few weeks ago & the same thing, no reply!

If I hear anything back I'll post the reply on this board.

Glad to know there are options. Nerve damage has made my right leg much weaker & it seems to be "aging" much faster. I can see one of these as a real good option. Looks first rate. Hope it comes to market & is proffitable enough for them to keep making them.

" I already sent them an email months ago about this but never got a reply. I sent another email a few weeks ago & the same thing, no reply!"

Not very encouraging... I sure hope it doesn't turn into one of those prototypes that never actually gets into production.

You must realise they are French and probably intimated by English correspondence. I am in contact with them fairly often, but even so, they sometimes take time to answer, which means to me they have their hands on their mills and lathes rather than on their computer keyboards.

Hi Jean,

Fair enough point. I'm sure it's difficult to keep a business running & answer all you emails.

I'll send an email in French & see what happens :D

Je vous adresse mes plus vifs remerciements
