Will a k&N R-0990 filter fit inside the stock airbox on a 72 commando? I have all the stock parts and would like to retain that original look till I need to go electric start.

I've gotta ask why?
The stock commando filter works a lot better than a k&n

No, it won't fit.

Re E-start, FWIW, an Alton E-start will allow you to keep the OEM airbox.

The stock commando? meaning a round element (not shaped like the ham-can)? Every picture I have seen is a round element.

I have never owned one but assume it would be round until you fit it into the ham can

It is, indeed! At least the ones I have purchased are that way - round at purchase, becoming ham-can shaped when you insert it into the ham-can shaped grill. In any case that KN is too deep and too wide to fit inside the ham can.
