Hi.
I am looking for to buy a Magneto and Dynamo for my Norton 99 engine.
I have seen a lot of these parts on ebay, but before to buy them i want to know what are the right parts.
Please, can you explain?
Thanks for help.
Piero

What year is this 99 engine Piero.

What does the parts book say about them ?

Hi.
Engine is 1957.
A lot of MagnetoLucas Model K2F are for sale on Ebay.
But the Magneto must be clock or anti clock wise, for the Norton engine?
If i think to the rear distributor points of my Atlas/P11, it turns clockwise so i think the magneto must be clockways too.
But i am not sure.
I dont have the parts book, sorry.

I have 4 mag/dynamo engines.
1950, 52, 53 and 1957-99 # 75050 (last engine for 1957 per BruceMain-Smith book)
They all have mag 42111 D or H The 99 mag may not be correct date is 1955
Remember to look out for AAU also... Automatic Advance Unit

How can you restore a bike without having the parts book ? !!
Always worth checking what it says in there first.

If you look into the timing chest of any dommie engine, you can figure out which way everything rotates.
The crank turns forwards (clockwise), the half time gear reverses it (so its anti-clock)
and the magneto and camshaft are same as the half time gear - so both anti-clock.
And the generator is gear driven so reverses (again), so its clockwise.
All looking into it from the oil pump side.

So you need an anti-clockwise K2F, and a clockwise E3L

Watch that Triumph used a very similar anti-clock K2F,
and a similar generator - but it spun anti-clock = opposite !! so not so similar...

The direction of spin can be reversed, by changing components, but will cost $$...
And unless its says they are completely rebuilt, anything you find will likely need a rebuild...

Hi.
May be the contrary?.
If you see from the timing side AAU, the magneto turns anticlockwise but if you see from the left rear side the magneto turns clockwise.
About E3L, i have found a E3CL, it is the same or works the same?
Let me understand better, please.
Thank you.

So if you stand in the right spot, it will always be spinning whichever way you need ??? !!! ??? !!!
nope...

The little label on a K2F tells you all you need to know.
And is ALWAYS viewed from the DRIVE END of the magneto.

Not sure I know what an E3CL is - not in my Lucas lists.

It has to have the 3 fitting screws provision like this one - at 9, 12 and 3 oclock.
If not, it likely won't fit a dommie.
Pardon the rust, it hasn't been used since 1952.

Should be clockwise too - big arrow on the body.

Hi.
Please, this magneto works for 99?

Thank you.

ebay one would probably fit.
The guy says it "was pulled from a 63 atlas".
He might not be lying BUT it is NOT a 63 atlas mag.
63 is K2FC 42368D I have two of them for my bikes
It is a bitza. tag says 42453 2-67, but the parts on the points end are from an earlier mag like a 42111.
I may be out of touch, but IMO way to much money for a core that needs rebuild..
first thread on shaft looks mashed

Reversing dynamo direction of rotation is easy and free.

But first you've got to know that your dynamo has the wrong direction.

Yes, although bear in mind that armatures are wound to suit direction of rotation.

If they are spun in t'other way, the output is less.
Although the difference may be slight....

+1
Atlas had a K2FC from the factory, this might have been swapped by a P.O, but if it rotates the right way round would still do the job.

Having an auto advance unit instead of manual spark advance makes a lot of sense these days.
And for probably most of the past 50 years as well......

I've tried manual advance on singles and twins and it's hard to see the point of it.

Ditto - having manual control of the spark timing when auto advance does a great job just doesn't make sense.

Unless Lucas maybe had tons of spares for them ...??
Wasn't all magneto production to stop in 1963 (?).

Hi.
Please, i can see from the picture the dynamo's gear.
But i dont know and i have never seen the camshaft sprocket with the dynamo gear.
Could you post a picture?
Thanks.
Piero

Bits as shown.

The fibre gear is approx 85 mm.
The camshaft sprocket needs to be of the generator drive type,
and also the star washer and the peg-driven flat ring.

Be aware that the single cylinder mag-dyno parts all look similar, but are not interchangeable. !
I don't know who's brilliant idea that was, but they should be crucified as a good start...

Hi.
Thank you so much.
Fibre gear?
I had seen one in steel, are they different?
