I’ve been reading the blurb on the G4074 14mm Colourtune unit, and it Is a short reach unit, and there is a 19mm adaptor to make it suitable for our head threads. Is this correct? ie buy the unit and add an adaptor as well.

These units aren’t available in UK from their distributors, and when I contacted Gunson they told me they’re waiting for supplies maybe some time in July. So I went and had a look on eBay and watched 2 used units sail past their new price on auction. Then I found one on buy it now £30 under what the auction went for. So I bought it.

Shall I get the adaptor?

(Useless comment) I bought a Colourtune maybe 30? years ago now... wow... I still have it in the original box. II'll have to dust it off in my old tool box and see what I need to make this work.

Mine is an M14 unit, no adaptor needed as it screws straight into the head with a normal plug hex on it, being short does not matter for the length of time its needed, came with the sighting tube, HT extension etc but that was some 40 years ago. I used it a lot when I first got it, then got to be able to get it just by ear but now if you have an EI with idle stabilisation its a must have again. With idle stabilisation as you move away from the correct mixture and the revs drop the timing is changed to get the idle speed back up again which defeats the doing it by ear as engine idle speed is no longer related solely to mixture.

I take it what you mean is the 14mm long reach adaptor?
This isn't strictly necessary as the short-reach plug should still work as if I remember correctly when I used a Colortune (yes it is 'Colortune' although a Gunson product) getting on for 40 years ago I don't remember any long-reach 14mm adaptor being available.

The packaging for my 40 odd year old Colortune lists 10/12/18mm adaptors, but nothing else..

You don't need anything to make it work, well you need a spark plug spanner but that's it
Cheers

Well I’ve decided as it‘s only a few quid, minuscule considering what I’ve spent recently , that I’ll get one anyway. The way these things are selling on eBay if I use it and sell it I should make a profit

You'd be better off just buying a 14 mm colour tune to be honest
The best thing about them is the Twitter it gives when you rev the motor

Yes I'm surprised by how much they are selling for on eBay
I have 2 or 3 of them somewhere,been a while since I used them
I used to fit one in each side and ride at night glancing down on them on the local trading estate
Then I bought the narrow band Koso
Cheers

I have one somewhere in one of my "safe" places but not seen for at least 10 yrs. As I remember you are warned against using above idle (unless you want the glass shooting out in your eye). It is one of the few gadgets around that works.

It only works on dark days, never in bright sunshine. . . . Which is why mine only comes out at night
