Crankshaft seal question

I don't know what "shoulder" you speak of.
There is a shoulder on the crankshaft that is flush with the crankcase that the seal needs to slide over, You'll have to look at the parts breakout of the crankshaft, the first drawing in the parts book.

That's not a bad idea, the keyway is not the issue as much as the crankshaft shoulder
There is no shoulder - it smoothly tapers and then transitions to the sealing surface. A little oil, slide it on, drift it home.

Big fan of reed valves. One is almost enough to draw the internal case pressure negative and make turning the seal around an improvement .

I can think of several errors in factory parts books. I use them but don't necessarily trust them.

Isn't all this mechanical stuff fun?

So fun . To be honest there are times that fixing/improving is equally as enjoyable as riding the end result .

Ok, I finally got around to pulling the seal, and low and behold I had it installed with the spring toward the crank. It was a fun thread anyway. Thanks for all the replies. Phil
