Due to a kind offer of help from Jim Schmidt here are a few pics of the 920. I will attempt to post more when the bike is on the Dyno in a week or so.
Suzuki rear hub. I chose this hub for its classic looks & ease of sprocket changes, but mainly for it's superb cush drive.

Rear link. To put this in the best position meant losing the centre stand.

Adjustable ISO spring. A great idea nicked from Jim Comstock. Jim, as you are not selling them I hope you don't mind.

Hi matchless, what kind of BMW yokes did you fit , as I had too some yamaha R6 forks (41mm) but with R6 yokes and they are only 40mm offset , and the few I had test the bike it's a bit twitchy...!
Apart of ........great bike , love that !

Looking good Martyn!

Three points:
1. Pictures are all very nice... But please hurry with the Dyno info and road impressions!
2. I assume that if you're using JS 920 pistons at 8.9:1, you're not utilising the squish band?
3. The bike will do another 10mph if you cut your hair !!

Nice job Martin! how is your rear link bracket fixed to the frame? is it welded or clamped?

Those are some very nice mods.

The mullet is pretty decent as well.

Bonjour Pierre,

I'm on my way to Georges Boisniere's French Triple rally next week.
I am going on my Commando and travelling down with a mate on a Rocket 3. We disembark ferry at St.Malo @7am on Thursday 4th September.
The rally is a few kms north of Angers, maybe you could contact Georges and come along ?

regards
sam

You've got your self a real world class winner here to me and appreciate the attitude of your display. Its closest Norton looking un-Norton so far to Peel's alterations. That 'rump rod' to me is the most significant transformer to handle the power steering so it hardly matters what fork installed as fully extended w/o much load pitching into though and out of turns. Scab on a stick across the top of front fender to lightly place feet on for a while to feel what I'm talking about and get back to us please. Very curious if you find yours gives a huge inertial smoothness sense with the links and under spring. I recognize the late 70's GT 750 hub too with its over size cushions so mainly like the changeable sprocket and disc brake mount. Love your propeller like sprocket adapter as rather more refined than mine. [plus no rat piss corrosion from shed storage] What size is the meaty looking rear tire? Kinda of a sleeper at first glance with the traditional black and gold scheme. Hope your engine strains the dyno capacity so corners of your grin crack off!

Lovely bike.
Well considered mods.
A few more details of what you did to the engine would be nice.
Thanks for sharing.

Thanks for the kind comments. The idea was to keep the bike looking like a Commando Interstate. In my opinion, the best looking bike ever, but with genuine improvements for reliability, performance & handling.
The rear hub is 1978 Suzuki GS 550 but a CB750 F1 or a Z750/1000 could be made to fit with a similar amount of work.
The yokes are from a BMW K75 from 1994/5. Earlier models are bored to 41.3mm whilst these are 41mm dia. The offset keeps the trail almost identical to the Norton 850 yokes. It is rock steady at any speed.
I TIG welded all the brackets & front down tube braces to the frame. The bottom left rear tie bar mount is a welded fab. bolted to the engine plates.
As for the hair, if I had it cut short I would lose all my strength & wouldn't be able to hold the bike up!!
Nick, the engine spec is
Maney cases, barrels (920) crank
JS rods & pistons
PW3 cam
Comstock modified Fullauto head

Martyn.

I must agree about the big black Interstate as most proportioned functional looking. With a 'rump rod' you may also appreciate more area for knees to grip tight no thought of sticking em out on far over leans. i've got the makings of another 'breast support', ally radius rod, 5/16" rod ends with ally down tube clamp, just needs a engine side mount. Would donate to you to try tri-linked. I just welded a vertical bolt on the top front iso mount nut to see if it vibed to find it smoothed out even more the sense of riding a motorcycle and allowed frame to twist to let tire conflicts load just pass through w/o any rebounding. Hope its pleasing you silly,

Were you trying to use 19 inch wheels with 40mm offset ?

I like the big rubber draft tube, if that is what it is. I run the same on mine but it needs a 45 degree slice cut off it to induce flow. Like the old day car draft tubes that disappeared with the advent of closes crancase ventilation and PCV valves.

I certainly don't mind. I hope it works as well on your bike as it does on mine. Great looking Commando. Jim

Just noticed the uncut fin on the exhaust ring. What a good idea!
Maybe lots are supplied like that, I don't know. But easy to keep under surveillance.
Loose exhaust rings are not a problem I have recent experience with.

(big guzzi's use proper nuts and studs to hold the pipe into the head).

I think that is pretty standard, they are on my 74.

The uncut fins are for tightening the rings. If you remember years ago, before they changed to this type, fins would bend or even break off.
Did 265 miles yesterday around my favourite roads. I love this bike! Apart from the improvements to the engine & brakes, I particularly like the TTI 5 speed. Sell your children, put your wife into slavery, just treat your bike to one. It has really improved the bike as much as I had hoped. The only slight niggle is finding neutral can be awkward at times. This was never a problem with the AMC 'box. The clutch is lifting fully so I may have to fettle the selector drum over the winter. Any one else had this problem?
