You didn't park it too close to an anti-gravity device, did you?
Seriously, the fuel system is gravity-fed; it can't "air lock." I agree with Concours, it was a coincidence. Maybe some junk was obstructing the fuel flow and it was displaced when you "purged" it.
The best way to purge the fuel line is to simply turn the main tap on wait a couple of seconds then turn the reserve on. You'll hear any air in the line bubble up into the tank, then turn the reserve off. If the tank is on reserve do it the other way round.
