Hi All,

I am in the process of dismantling my 1974 850 commando. At the moment I am trying to remove the cylinder head, but I can't get a wrench or socket, Whitworth or otherwise onto what I think is the #2 head bolt - the one in the back.

What tools do I need or need to modify to turn this nut?

Thanks in advance!

It's "1/4 Whitworth" jaw size (0.525" A/F), and it is often necessary to grind a spanner/wrench down to get to it?

If you don't have 1/4" Whit. spanner/wrench handy, then a 13mm one will do it, if you grind out the jaws slightly, or a 14mm may do it, but that will be a slightly loose fit.

What is the best way to torque this nut down, is just by feel, or a very expensive tool?

I just go by feel. Works for me.

I have an offset 1/4 Whitworth ring spanner that fits nicely. I've also seen them referred to as "obstruction wrenches". I bought mine from our local Norton dealer (!) many years ago. Don't know of a source these days however. Grinding something down may be the only option now.

You can do it by feel as I have for as long as I can remember (Suppose that could be pretty short :( ). Or, measure the length of your wrench, a bit of simple maths, then use a spring balance to pull it to the correct torque keeping the balance square to the wrench.

A 14mm will work, 13mm won't fit.

Just buy an inexpensive box-end 14mm and grind down the outside edges a little at a time 'till you get it to fit.
