The bike starts and runs until I let go of the E-start button and then dies immediately.
Does anyone have an idea why this happens?

A couple of quick thoughts come to mind.

1. You are running original points, and you have a break in the white/blue (or white/yellow) wire)power from kill switch), so only the white/purple is supplying power from the solenoid while the starter button is depressed.

2. You have original points (with the W/P wire still operational), and you have the kill switch off. Depending on the orientation of the wires in the headlight, this is quite possible.

3. You have really messed up the headlight connector, and power is passing "in reverse" (as it were) ,so the W/Y wire only becomes energised when the starter is operated. Unlikely, but, again, possible.

Somewhere to start anyhow.

Great, thanks,
The switch cluster is pretty messed up. I'll see if I can sort it out.
Missing parts and all.
Well, well, that fixed it.
Love it when a plan comes together.
Now if I can just get the rear disk brake working I can give her back to her owner.

Luckily I had some spare parts laying around.
