1. You are running original points, and you have a break in the white/blue (or white/yellow) wire)power from kill switch), so only the white/purple is supplying power from the solenoid while the starter button is depressed.
2. You have original points (with the W/P wire still operational), and you have the kill switch off. Depending on the orientation of the wires in the headlight, this is quite possible.
3. You have really messed up the headlight connector, and power is passing "in reverse" (as it were) ,so the W/Y wire only becomes energised when the starter is operated. Unlikely, but, again, possible.
