Hi all,

I recently picked up a '70 Roadster (136xx April) and am in the process of putting it all back together. She came along with a few big boxes, and it's been real interesting emptying them out.

The POs story on the bike went something like... Bought it from a friend that dropped it back in 1972. Had a couple minor scrapes from the incident - foot peg, halo and right silencer. Anyhow, he rode it a few times over the next decade and decided to paint it and replace the buggered chrome. Well, 30 years later, it changed hands before he got around to it.

All in all, she's in great shape and I've worked my way up to wiring. I wasn't properly worried when I surgically removed the old greasy harness with the intention of building a fresh one. When I dig in to the rider's, workshop and parts manual, Things just don't always line up with my bike, including the controls and wiring diagram. So, I figured I would jump on here and start to seek out some info.

These questions are out of curiosity and ignorance so I can learn about the original bike. While I'm assembling, I might as well get it all "right.". It can all certainly be hooked up as-is.

First off, I have a control switch on the left bar - slides on - has 2 buttons and a dipswitch. I'm assuming this is for kill, horn and hi/lo? Wiring diagram doesn't show a kill switch. No indicators, so I'm guessing this is all it came with.

Did the early Roadster have just the single mirror?

The front brake line is fitted with a stop switch. Riders book says it was optional with disc brakes. I've got drum brakes. Looks like the harness was wired for it, but diagram doesn't show it.

Finally, are there any good pics around of a solid tach/speedo cable routing?

Thanks for any responses. This is (clearly) my first foray in to Norton ownership!

-Cheers

The Commando switch is what is known as a "Triconsul" unit, with headlamp flash, horn and dip switch functions

Your pre-71 wiring diagram should show "Main beam flasher push", Horn push" and "Dip switch". There are similar "Ducon" and "Tricon" versions of the switch unit but they have different switch functions to the Triconsul. Pattern copies of Ducon and Tricon switches are available, however there is no pattern version of the Triconsul switch that I'm aware of.

1970 would be too early for direction indicators to have been fitted.

A mirror would not have been fitted as standard.

The front brake cable with brake light switch was US model part, but it may have been fitted to all S models?

I'm sure somebody will be able to supply some photos.

To the best of my knowledge all '70 models imported to the USA had a brake light switch in the front brake cable. My 1970 'S' has it.

Here is some good info I found on installing the cables.

"1. If you grease your cable, don't put grease on the top 12", if you do it will find its' way up into the instrument and will damage it.

2. The length of cable protruding into the bottom of the instrument is critical. If there is any kind of obstruction which does not allow the lower end of the inner cable to properly enter the drive, then the top end will push too far into the drive mechanism of the instrument and destroy it. We have seen many instances of this. Install the cable at the lower end (remember to secure the outer cover of the speedo cable to the lower side of the swing arm or the end fitting will break off) and examine the top end before fitting it to the instrument. If you slide the knurled nut to its highest position the tip of the inner cable should be exactly level with the top edge of the nut."

The speedo and tach cables go from the instruments between the ear of the halo and the shell, down under the lower fork tree, the tach into the tach drive, the speedo along the left side tube all the way back to the speedo gearbox. Look at some of the 70 sales brochures and it is easy to see. The two cables are tied together about half way up.

True, the cable switch for the brake light is not in the wiring diagram. If you need, I can sketch it out for you, but it shouldn't be hard to figure.
