I am working with a mechanic to replace the gearbox seals, which were leaking. Fred checked the manual and parts book, and ordered all the parts he figured the bike would need while he was still working on the previous bike. That bike done, I brought Norton in and he tore the primary case and gearbox apart, finding several worn parts, so more parts ordered. Such is the nature of the beast. He also found there was no seal on the kickstarter shaft.

Mechanic had ordered a new seal (see image on right) which didn't fit. With a little investigation, we founds that the diagram in the parts manual [ https://andover-norton.co.uk/en/shop-drawing/129/gearbox-outer-cover-kickstart ] is incorrect. The correct seal for a Mark III is this puppy: https://andover-norton.co.uk/en/shop-details-2/16715/oil-seal-kickstart which goes on the OUTSIDE of the cover, not the inside as shown in the diagram. The gearbox shell photographed for the Andover website https://andover-norton.co.uk/en/shop-details-2/16466/gearbox-outer-cover-850-mk3- shows the seal in the right spot.

This is being posted for general edification

P. S. By "seal" I do not mean the marine mammal that sits on buoys in harbors and yells at you when you sail past.
