I read a thread, in the last month, that was advising Avon was apparently cutting back on production labour in the UK - and, presumably, tyre production.
Can't find that thread now.
Will Avons be more difficult to buy??
Cheers

They are closing the factory.
Hopefully they will relocate motorcycle tyre production elsewhere as they have said they will.
But IMHO we should expect shortages whilst that relocation process happens. Allegedly they are way behind in production anyway, so stocks are already low. Relocating will only add to the overall shortage.
And… Avons vintage tyre range is pretty big, I imagine some of the more specialist sizes must be incredibly slow sellers. I expect they will cut back the range somewhat, hopefully not effecting Commandos etc but some of the rarer / older stuff.

Maybe they will move abroad and carry on manufacture
I was talking to a mate of mine that had recently been to Poland
He said he saw two companies that used to be local to him out there
One of them he used to work for
So hopefully they will just carry on

Yes, that’s the official line, they’re relocating somewhere (dunno where).

But nevertheless, there’ll be a lack of manufacturing during the relocation and set up of tools and equipment.

So likely to be a temporary disruption to supply I believe.

Hopefully they will make plenty of the Avon road rider MK2 s , and send them to nz , it's a shame the , adverts, say not available in your region. :-(

I had to switch to Continental Classic race tires a few seasons back as the Avons race tires were not available anywhere- I did like the Avon units and hope they eventually make it back to market.

But the demand for Classic race tires is vanishingly small, so I’m not holding my breath. The Conti’s are good and do the job, and I’ll spoon on another set next season.

…..if I can get them.

In case supplies start running short I just bought two fronts (3222) and two rears (2822) and will store them in garbage bags to reduce light and volatile losses.
Then again, maybe I'm contributing to a potential shortage.
They really are great tyres though (100/90x19, 4.00x18 Roadrider Mk2s)
Cheers

Ordered a 100/90 18 RR Mk2 a few days ago. Suppose to arrive today or tomorrow. If it does indeed come as promised I'll be happy.

What a shame. Yet more bad news for British industry.

Apparently they plan to move production to Serbia.

That report says that the car & SUV tyre production was moved to Serbia amoung other places in 2018. Only motorcycle & motorsport tyre production remained, seems it's this that's going to Montlucon facility in France, which is going to be the sole source of bike tyres.

A great pity, but at least production will continue.

Use a vaccuum to suck all the air out and tightly zip tie the necks to keep O2 out.

I think I read somwhere to store them on their sides, but I could be wrong.

Tires may age somewhat in storage, but they don't start to age until they are mounted and filled with air. Even if you were to buy a new tire that's already three years old, I would conservatively count those years as half years and say the tire has 4.5 years left. It would have to be up to you whether you think that you'll get that many years out of the tread. However, storage under sweltering conditions may somewhat negate this effect.

Shortages of everything for old motorcycles is punishment for what we should have done when we had the opportunity and did not. Just before Steve Oszko died , he said to me - 'you idiot, you have left it too late; !'. The problem is you need to get smart as you get older, but when I got smarter, it was not soon enough.

Old tyres adversely affect your confidence, and new tyres give you false confidence. So there is a midpoint in time when tyres are perfect.

If I didn't know how old they were I couldn't tell the difference....

A very well known racer (someone with multiple National Championships, TTs etc ) who had more racing mileage in one year than some members here have had in the last 30 was invited to do a parade/demonstration. He made it as far as Redgate after leaving pit lane before ending up on his arse, a whole 400 yards. He said he had no warning, it just went from under him. The tyres were 8 years old (and his wife had told him to put new tyres on beforehand, but he said he was only going for a parade and they should be ok)

I can't quote her response when I went to tell her what had happened. Luckily only his pride was injured

Think I know the event you are referring to, I was there, fairly close and saw it.
Not a pretty sight and not funny. I can imagine his wife's response 😳
