Walking dogs..

I have had pet ownership thrust upon me by my various female companions throughout my adult life. Growing up on a dairy farm, surrounded by animals during my formative years can leave polarizing viewpoints on animal ownership on a person. I seemed to bond more with tractors and machinery than the finer aspects of herdsmanship. Hence why I did not follow the dairy farming path.

I had a couple of rotties that I thought the world of. The first one was taken by the first ex-wife, and that was absolutely heartbreaking - even the dog was heart broken. My ex came to pick some of her stuff from the house, and brought the dog for a visit. I was sitting on the couch. The rottie hopped up on the couch, sat down and leaned in next to me. Our eyes met and tears started streaming down her face.... that was one of the saddest, most touching things that I had ever seen...

The second one was a family pet. She was great with the kids and just a lovely dog. She was put into the care of a family friend when we moved to the UK for 2.5 years with my job. About 2 months before we were to return to Canada, she became sick. After many tests, the diagnosis was megaesophagas - a paralysis of the esophagus that left her unable to swallow. There is no treatment, you could only try to slowly feed her soft foods with her head elevated and let gravity try to do the job. Limited success, and she was slowly starving. The day after I got home from the UK, my daughter and I picked her up. From the neck up, she was herself, and her personality had not been a casualty of her affliction. The rest of her was a furry bag of bones... We took her straight to the vet and had her put down. We all broke down into tears, the vet included... She is buried in my back yard.

I have resisted getting any more pets. I live alone most of the time, and I like being able to simply lock the door and ride away from the house whenever I want, for as long as I want. I find joy in other's pets, and that is enough for me.

Beautiful pair of doggies! You’re going to have so much fun. Very happy for you. It’s kinda hard for non dog owners to realize just how much unconditional love these animals give to us but we know, don’t we Rob?

Hi Rob ,love extra fur on the nose, they will be good mates all right , my Bloodhound Jed is now 5 ½ here's a puppy pic at 3 months . Cheers Vaughn
Is that Jed, as in "a poor mountaineer but he kept his family fed"?
Cheers

Yes great intro song :) , named after Jed Clampet from the Beverly Hill billys .

Wish us luck gents. On July 8th my boy Tyrion and I are entered in the 2022 AKC Rally National Championship to be held in Wilmington, Ohio, USA. For those of you that don’t know what dog rally trials are about, I’ll briefly explain. A rally course is set up in a approximate 40’x50’ area consisting of 10 to 15 signs telling you what to do with your dog. For instance, sign number 1 may read for you to down your dog while heeling and then walk around your dog back to the heel position. Then it’s off to the next sign and a different exercise and so on til the finish. You are scored by how well you and your dog as a team complete each exercise with 100 points possible. in case of a points tie, the winner is determined by the fastest time. There is a lot more to it than I described but you get the idea.

There will be competitors there from all over the United States. In my class alone there are 78 entrants. In total there will be about 800-900 dogs at this event. Huge venue, the Roberts Centre.

We didn’t enter this event to lose but if we make it to the top ten I’ll be very, very happy! Anyways, wish us good luck.

Here is a picture of Tyrion with some previous winnings.

Well my boy Tyrion and I are finally back home from our rally trials. We had a great time even though we didn’t make it to the top ten. We did two runs. The first run we scored 90/100 and the second run was 97/100. The first run wasn’t bad, just not good enough. Our second run was really good, one of our best. Unfortunately the scoring system was a two run cumulative total which meant that our cumulative score was 187/200. Not enough for the top ten. If our first run matched our second we would have been in the hunt. I didn’t come home with any ribbons or medals but I did come home with the best dog ever. That’s winning. I am so proud of my boy Tyrion.

This is Nugget … if whatever powers that may be are willing , this fall will be our 14th season of frightening quail together.
He is a loner who doesn’t like to be alone.

Nugget’s predecessor Jester - lost him @ 9yrs to congestive heart failure.

There are only two things wrong with having a dog .
1) You get too attached
2) They don’t live forever .

they are pals. Through and through.
and it hurts. big time.
Remember the good times.

when I finally retire, I want either a blue tick cattle dog or a lab, that wasn't f#cked by the American Kennel Society.

That would be the American Kennel Club. And how would the dog be f#caked by them? Just curious.

Might mean back breeding for certain traits , which the judges desire for a certain look , but can bring undesirable problems , like poor breathing in bulldogs , or hip problems , birthing issues etc..
