Walking dogs..

When I was a young child, I watched a movie by Walt Disney and it was called: Big Red,
The next year AKC made the Irish Setter, the dog of the year and the breeders had their way.
What happened to that gun dog breed?
sorry to go off topic.
Love your dog.

Many field and water dog breeds had their "nose" and field skills eroded by inbreeding for the specific purpose of the animals appearance.

I don’t think many of the sporting dogs in the show ring could find a bird in their dinner bowl … BTW - this is no reflection on Larry and his wonderful dog . Obviously both are made of the right stuff .

Thank you Richard. What you guys are talking about is called conformation. That’s where you see all the stupidly dressed plump women trotting around in a circle showing their dogs gait for the judge. And yes, most dogs you see in the conformation ring could probably not do the job their breed was bred for. These dogs are bred for looks only. They are judged by the breed standards published by the AKC, UKC or whatever. They call this a dog sport although there isn’t much sporting about it. The AKC and UKC have field trials for hunting dogs that actually do exactly what they are bred for. Dogs in these sports are bred for their hunting abilities, not for looks or conformation. They are bred for intelligence and stamina and a lot of other specific traits. Dogs are bred to do specific jobs for the most part. The German Shepherd for example has been bred for its size, temperament, intelligence and stamina for security work and such. Look up shutzhund dog training. Basically what I’m saying is that dogs are bred to do a job and for some dogs their only job is to conform to the breed standards published by the various organizations. There are conformation dogs, working dogs, obedience dogs, rally dogs, agility dogs, trick dogs, dancing dogs, security dogs….. all of these are sports sponsored by the AKC and UKC. So in my opinion, I think that AKC and UKC have done a pretty good job. If there were no AKC, UKC there would be no purebred dogs, only mutts.

If you’re going hunting you buy a hunting dog bred for that purpose. You go to a reputable breeder that specializes in hunting breed lines not to the show ring conformation breeder that specializes in appearance.

Don't know what it's like overseas, but here in the UK the 'fashionable accessory' dog has taken over somewhat.
No purebreds, these mongrels are bred for the 'oooh and aaaah' factor, regardless of whether it can walk, breathe or even stand up straight. And the prices achieved are absolutely ludicrous....
From the first ten pages (out of fifty) of Gumtree, the following 'breeds' await new homes:
Matipoos, Morkies, Jackawowas, Chorkies, Cockerpoos, Labradoodles, Boradors, Cavapoos, Cavachons, Poochons, Sprockers, Beluskys, Pomchis and doubtless many more for the gullible punter.
Passed two this weekend that really should have been put in a bucket at birth, neither could walk or breathe properly. One would have been incapable of following a straight line, given the curvature of it's spine it's rear end would have overtaken the front had it any energy...
Very sad to see...

Every dog needs a job. Your dog is obviously a supervisor, listen to him well.

Designer dogs just piss me off. Let me rephrase that, designer dog breeders just piss me off. Also the stupid people that buy these dogs actually think that they are buying a purebred when in all actuality they are just buying a mutt. It’s very sad to see.

If you’re going hunting you buy a hunting dog bred for that purpose. You go to a reputable breeder that specializes in hunting breed lines not to the show ring conformation breeder that specializes in appearance.
Agreed.
I grew up with a large group of Golden and Labrador Retrievers, one of which was a Midwest-Nationals field trial champion who was eventually stolen from my dads kennels. I was 4 years old and some ahole stole my best friend.
The few photos from the field trial days that have managed to live on show a GR very different in appearance compared to today's Goldens as just one example.
As you noted in your post above, that's the way the GR breed was taken...a really good little retriever was converted to a run around in circles show dog.

Are 'designer' mutts such a bad thing in themselves? Surely the people who buy cockerpoos or labradoodles know what they are buying, ( I might concede that some people dont understand ). The worst aspect is that those dogs may have been bred in puppy farms by disreputable people trying to make a quick quid.

p.s. neighbour has a very scruffy golden labradoodle, hair goes in every direction. He's a lovely dog. They named him Boris.

Two Old books that I read with regards to hunting dogs:
Amazon product ASIN 0525247343

I have both and recommend them. My hunting buddy who had two German Shorthaired Pointers and a lab borrowed them and never returned them back to me. :( Its been years now and still waiting.

This author : Richard A Wolters uses training techniques for hunting dogs very much like the seeing eye dogs for the blind get trained.

I like hunting dogs, but won't knock anyone who has show dogs or even mongrels. I'm just sensitive to what happens to dogs like the black lab. ( Gun dogs and Water dogs in general). Bad breeding practices bug me.

there are Sheepdogs and then there are Sheepdogs:
both have different purposes. Each to his own I guess.

Cheers,
Tom

I'd guess most on Gumtree are bred in some chavs spare room (or ANY room) for a quick profit, by the clueless.... for the clueless.
Let's just call them mongrels (the dogs, that is!) as that's what they are.
Granted, there's some nice mongrels out there, and always has been, but they used to occur when some randy mutt jumped the fence, not when some cynical dickhead sees easy money...

The original jump the fence mongrel, generally would have less health issues I have heard , and the purebreds can have more issues like hip problems in German Shepherds and twisted stomachs in large breasted dogs etc etc , I don't know if that follows through with the designer dogs .

This town is awash with pugs, french bulldogs and other flat nosed ornaments that can usually be heard struggling for breath miles away.
Christ knows what they sound like on the job!!
Doubtless all the owners can hear is: 'ker-ching'.

Hopefully those desiger breeders aren't allowed near the wild life or we'll have some more weird animals jumping up the trees ! Koalaroos ! ,.... sounds like you've got it bad over there , I've never heard of so many designer dogs .

A little more information about labradoodles. Goes for all the doodles. This is why cross breeding is a bad idea.

Origins[edit]

The term "Labradoodle" was first used by Donald Campbell to describe his dog, a Labrador/Poodle cross (1955).[8] However, the use of a Labradoodle as a guide/service dog was not common until 1989. Australian breeder Wally Conron introduced the cross-breed to the Royal Guide Dog Association of Australia in Victoria. Conron hoped that the combination of the low-shedding coat of the poodle, along with the gentleness and trainability of a Labrador retriever, would provide a guide dogsuitable for people with allergies to fur and dander.[9][10][11]

Sultan, a dog from this litter, displayed all the qualities Conron was seeking and worked as a guide dog for a woman in Hawaii for ten years.[9]

Conron has since repeatedly stated he regrets initiating the fashion for this type of crossbreed and maintains it caused "a lot of damage" together with "a lot of problems", largely stemming from the genetic unpredictability of combining breeds. He also felt he was to blame for "creating a Frankenstein", adding that problems were being bred into the dogs rather than selectively breeding away from problems and towards a recognizable standard. He is further quoted as claiming: "For every perfect one, you're going to find a lot of crazy ones."[12] Mr. Conron was referring to the craze he initiated of unscrupulous breeders crossing Poodles with multiple other breeds to create "designer" dogs in order to take advantage of the “doodle” trend.

My next door neighbor has one of the crazy ones note above. Incessant barking, no control, bolts out the door given the chance etc. etc.
Not the sharpest tool in the shed.
This specific dog went to "training camp" for over 2 months. It will always need to be on a lead if taken outside.
