Today I had a closer look at the pushrods from my dismantled engine and discovered this scoring on the left exhaust rod.
Has anybody experienced this or have an idea how it could have appeared.
No doubt I will have to replace it.
On the other rods nothing of this sort was to be found.

I had that on one pushrod the first time I took it down from new I believe. Apparentley caused by copper head gasket or casting flash not cleaned up properly.

Had that problem with my 1972 Combat, found the pushrods were too long, as well as being different lengths, also as the other chaps said some the head gaskets can do with a bit of a clean out in the pushrod area.
I made up new pushrods to give the correct angles to suit the valve stems.

Unfortunately my cylinders and head are at the machine shop to allow me to do a dry build for examination. There was a composite gasket previously fitted but that does not rule the copper gasket culprit out.
Does anybody have the true lengths of the inlet and outlet pushrod?

the standard Commando lengths:

  • 06-7940, intake, 8.15" long, weight 45g
  • 06-7941, exhaust, 7.3" long, weight 40g

I had it on mine, fortunately I noticed it during assembly. I had to relieve the inside tunnel. It was as if the tunnel was not central to the casting. A few minutes with small course flap wheel and it was sorted.

Relieve. Central.

Auto complete strikes again.

But really cereal is what the kids are having as their second dinner just now.

Original lengths of the pushrods should only be used as a guide, unless you have a bog standard engine, that you are absolutely certain it is bog standard , my engine was certainly not.
You need to make sure the rocker arms are cutting an equal swipe across the valve stems to prevent excess forces on the stems and guides, to prevent premature wear from those excess thrust forces.

Whoa there cowboys..... Just what are you talking about? Some of it sounded rather suggestive as I walk up.
