How do I add a photo ?
If you are not a VIP member , then you need to sign up with a photo hosting website like photobucket , fotki , or vgy.me . You put your photos at those sites and then you copy a link to them. This way AN does not need to store the actual image it saves space for them etc.. It is easy and it works so go for it.

Right so its starting to come together, up to 2011 Norton used the Baker box then I assume they changed to the box from Taiwan. I'm guessing a little but because the Baker gearset was a direct HD replacement logic suggests that the HD box can indeed be used which confirms what I have been told.
Also , I can imaging not using the USA made but rather the Taiwan gearbox and crankshaft saved them lots of money . I would be happy to buy parts directly from Norton if I could get them . I would like to support the company if they will do the same for me ? The transmission in my 961 is far smoother and slicker than the XR1200 . But many more miles on the Norton 17.8K vs 5k miles. The later Sportster transmission also has some helical cut gears I see.

This is a photo of some stuff I have bought and the Baker trap doors are clearly visible, unfortunately no complete gearboxes.

Anyone but Photobucket, if you do use Photobucket at some point they will hold you to ransom to return your own property.

You are assuming?

Well actually no, they did in fact change to a different box, the assumption was merely its country of origin.
I know they changed from direct gear lever (which I have on my 2011 bike) to a rearset type linkage and presumably the selector drum, but wasn't aware that they also changed supplier. Did you buy those as Norton parts or Harley ?

Bought as Norton parts, thats just a tiny part.

From what I recall, the early boxes required building up. The Taiwanese boxes we just had to remove the odd bolt and thread lock it back in. The stuff we got from Taiwan was actually very good. We quality controlled as far as we could, predominantly on visual aesthetics, but actual issues were few and far between, mainly just transportation marks etc.

Who has a 961 gear box apart? This is a 1991 Sportster 5 speed We can compare dimensions. Andrews makes several ratios. Bad thing I only have this box till Friday afternoon.

I don't have mine apart. But we know the the clutch mainshaft splines are not like the 961. The other quick thing that comes to mind for me is to see if our countershaft sprocket spline is the same ? Do you have a 961 sprocket you can try and slide on there ? If not can you get the OD of the spline and count the teeth peaks . Then when I get home I have a sprocket I will measure and I will count the valleys .

Is this definitely not the same as the Norton clutch spline ?

Is the Norton spline more like this, a much larger spline ?

Thats interesting, so what year is yours ? Its quite normal for the bearing to sit on the splines, thats fine.
2017 and no I could see wear on the splines already so I machined fill-in pieces for it to sit on so it was a nice snug push-on fit.

So I wonder if the earlier bikes had the smaller splines and that was what changed in 2011 ? Perhaps the larger splines with large gaps between the splines caused the wear issue, good fix though.
