Folding foot pegs (again)

I searched the topic and found responses of these natures:

1) Folding pegs are more suitable for racing and are used in conjunction with rear sets.

2) The OE non-folding pegs will protect your tin work if you dump in a parking lot.

3) Pictures of adapting various folding passenger pegs.

I like the warning folding pegs provide; when the pegs contacts the road I know that I have a small margin of "safety" left and either use the margin, the brakes or plan my exit or where I'm going to lay it down. I have not yet had to lay a motorcycle down, but did manage to get between the supports of a Rest Area sign in Pennsylvania which has always struck me as ironic.

I have come close to dumping while kick starting a hot motorcycle, but my thoughts were focused on not cooking my left leg; fortunately my angel stepped up and helped me recover before I got past a torn tendon.

The pictures I saw on this forum of adapted passenger pegs, with one exception, looked quite tacky.

I'd like to be able to utilize the existent threaded holes for a folding pegs solution that looks like they grew there.

Any suggestions?

When you find some good ones please put them up because the rigid ones give me grief every time I put mine in reverse to back up. I'm not as limber as I once was.

Ping Kenny at NYN or Matt at CNW or Don Pender. They all make nice rearsets with folding knuckles, so they might sell you the knuckles (if the threads match) or peg/knuckle combo.

Excellent lead, many thanks; and right under my nose (best place to hide anything). I'll get on that.

Norvil has folding pegs available to fit the standard mounts. I installed a set on my wife's mkiii.
Kinda pricey with shipping to the USA, but it solved an issue she had with putting the side stand down.

Pre mkiii. Don't know which bike you have.

Mkiii has a taper going into the mount, norvil has those too.

Many thanks, mine is pre mk3. I have gone to Norvil's site, seen the offering and sent them a few questions, but this is what I'm after. The large chunk of cheese they are asking is a pittance when weighed against the peace-of-mind factor it gives me; I have a propensity for misjudging apexes or going into corners a bit hot, folding pegs will give me the ability to decrease my turning radius or a few more heart beats to find a line of least regret, and I'll admit that I haven't had to make these choices but a very few times, but safety at any price is a bargain...

I never liked the rigid pegs until last year when I laid my bike down in a gravel dusted turn. Pegs saved everything valuable (tank and tins).

The NYN primary side rearsets would fold with the simple addition of the folding knuckle, as found on the timing side. Most of the parts are common to both.

Cliffa, thanks for the link; Esmerela's work is excellent and has the type of real soul that becomes part of the Norton's karma. gortnipper, thanks for the reminder, Kenny is on my call list. I sent an e-mail to Norvil yesterday.

I want to thank all that responded to my question, I now have 2 solid and 1 yet to be called leads.

Note that both sides of Madass' rear set footprgs have a folding knuckle. And if you want a rubber covered peg, his is the only one of the three that I noted that does.

I've got spring loaded folding pegs on the two modern Triumphs and GSXR type on the Vincent special.
Those are all decent but the stock 1947 Vincent type are the best to use. These don't use a spring so when folded out of the way they stay up with friction. They are easy to flip down with toe of boot when underway or at any time.
They are also adjustable in position for riders with different leg length. The gear lever is adjustable to follow the footpeg position adjustment and to allow for size 6 to size 14 rider feet. Very clever design for 2020 nevermind 1947.
The minute I get on the Commando or the BSA I miss those Vincent folding footpegs. I also miss them with the moderns as the spring keeps the footpegs down and in the way when you need to roll the bike a few feet when seated. The riders shins and calves take a beating.
The safety factor as mentioned by others is there with all the folding types but the ease of use when moving the bike about at gas stations etc is by far the best with the Vincent type.
I'm attempting to copy them for a Commando Special, will post some photos if that works out.

After speaking with a number of possible sources the trail lead to Norvil. Yes, pricey, but much less expensive than having a one-off set made. The Norvil assemblies are designed to fit in support rests that have a taper, mine were threaded. The complex that Rocky Point is located in has 4 machine shops; I know the guys 4 doors down and they made short (no charge) work of machining matching tapers. A bit of sanding and polishing and now on to another build area.

Thank you norton73!

Personally I find folding pegs invaluable for clearence.

With solid pegs I just don’t have the clearance to get the lawn mower past the bike when putting it in the shed...

Have you tried standing on them?

No, but personally I would give them a good workout in the garage to make sure they’re ok.

I appreciate your concern, and will give them a good load test; the fact that they are from Norvil and being used for the exact intended purpose gives me little reason to worry, but testing them and all other parts/components/systems is part of my break-in routines.

If they came from norvil I would definitely be wary of them and give them a thorough work out!!
