Question about Brexit

They stopped making them long ago, I could never afford a new one. My 2.3 ohc went out with a loud bang as it put not one but two feet out of bed!

Sadly, that is very wrong.

Racing requires frequent rebuilds, with new parts all made in factories somewhere, usually using metals that are mined and processes. Then there’s the frequent oil changes, tyres, not to mention those who build brand new bikes, etc, etc.

And racing requires race circuits, tarmac maintenance, buildings, services, etc,etc.

It ALL creates carbon...
 
QUALITY of life is important. You can save the planet, but we might all end up living like termites. Education is the only factor which has ever slowed the rate of global population growth. Education brings wealth which reduces the need for large families to provide a form of superannuation for the ageing population. As far as commuter vehicles are concerned, we could all ride and race 125cc single cylinder four-strokes. The trouble is that most people cannot even drive a car properly, let alone a motorcycle.
There was a friend of mine who used to ride a Yamaha pedallie from Ivanhoe to South Melbourne every day. When he was on the road, he used the little motor, while on the cycle path, he pedalled. You don't really need to drag a ton and a half of steel with you, everywhere you go.
 
Most of the fuel which is used in cars in trucks, goes towards overcoming inertia. Regenerative braking could be used on all vehicles.
 
I'm not really sure how this thread evolved into a climate change thread. That may be because I haven't read all 20+pages. Anyway in the video filmed many years ago, George Carlin hits the nail on the head. You would think it was filmed in 2019. Just goes to show you that the BS didn't start overnight. Save the Planet, Global Cooling, Global Warming, Climate Change, whatever you want to brand it. You expect your government to control it? They can't even run the DMV. Think about it!
 
Sadly you do make a valid point , guess it really up to the average Joe to try and do his small part , keeping in mind even the small things add up ....
 
Again, no one is saying the planet is going to explode into a ball of fire because of plastic bags. That would be ridiculous and the perfect thing to riff on in a comedy bit...COMEDY BIT.
 
Calling 'save the planet' BS is not constructive, nor is denial. Risks must be managed. I was talking to a farmer a while ago and he said 'our paddock is becoming overstocked'. If you don't believe the global population explosion is a threat, which planet are you living on ? If we keep going without changing, we risk major disruption when masses of people move to escape hardship. Our future is in our own hands. All we need is a common goal - 'decent quality of life for everyone without growth' might be good. When you are manufacturing, to make a profit, you must add value. Value comes in two forms - more widgets, or the same number of widgets with better quality. The trouble is that for most people, 'quality' is not definable.
 
What many people do not know is that if you put two blowflies into a cage with a finite but continuous amount of food, they breed until the cage of flies is full, then there is a mass extinction and only a couple of flies remain, buzzing around. Then the whole process repeats itself.
When I was a kid at school in the 1950s, our biology teacher pointed out that the global population doubles every 25 years. He said we would see the population crisis during our lifetimes.
 
The main difference is blow flies will not pollute the planet unlike humans who will leave the atmosphere polluted, the earth/soil also polluted that plant life would find it difficult to survive with the heavy pollution that is discarded into the water also.
I get your meaning, but the blow flies are a poor example.

I don't know of any other example other than the blowflies, where the effects of a population explosion have been demonstrated. It is something my biology teacher mentioned when I was in high school in the 1950s. When you think about it, it is difficult to find any other organism which would be suitable for such an experiment.

If we have another doubling of the global population in the next 25 years, there might be a pandemic we cannot handle - then a mass extinction ? - A nuclear war might have the same effect.

She sailed. But I agree, fuck the rest of them.
 
She sailed to US but due to crew changes etc if you include the ones needed to do the sailing back of the yacht to its starting point there were at least 5 transatlantic flights needed to support the journey, plus various pics show a powered support vessel in the background.
