e-start clunking?

I can see and hear it fine. I've never had that sound with my cNw electric start. I'm thinking you should contact
Matt for a diagnosis.

I can hear it. Maybe the belt is slapping the bottom case.
I concur with Lazyeye6, contact Matt.

Very nice Commando BTW.....

I think you are right. And it is a very nice Commando!

Well, call it blasphemy but I still say that belt primary tensions are being recommended too loose

Norvil says set it up so there is a 90 degree twist in the upper belt in the middle, this advice is now considered sacred

that is too loose and it comes from someone originally and rightfully understanding that as the baskets and primary heats up
the belt of course gets tighter

go ahead, set it up with a 90 degree twist, ride until the primary is blazing hot, pull off the outer cover and you still have plenty
of belt looseness

remember, the belt is tightest at the top because of the drive pull, the bottom belt will signal too tight only it has virtually no slack
with a fully heated up primary

the sound you are hearing is the belt slapping the bottom on the primary because it is too damn loose and will now wear faster too

set the belt when cold with around 70 degrees twist not 90 or some 30mm not 35mm upper belt movement

downward pressure on the kickstarter will tighten the upper belt, doing so with a fully hot primary will show you that the lower belt still has some slack, perfect

Crankshaft striking the inner chaincase fastener(s)? Did you check for contact during dummy assembly? It is a bit tricky trying to hear it, as the movie does not play smoothly for me.
Have you taken the pugs out, and turned everything slowly over by hand to potentially detect any contact issue?

Dave,

I will get a hold of you in the morning and we’ll figure it out. No worries

Matt

Belt tension is set per Matt's instructions. The primary bolts were provided with the kit. I will check for noises while turning it over by hand, thanks for the tip.

The file is a .MOV movie (a big one) so I dunno why some can't hear it. You guys might have better luck visiting my web page - http://davidrcullen.com/norton.html
The link to the movie file is at the bottom of that page.

I've also uploaded it to You Tube - let's see if this works ...

Did this issue get resolved?

It’s always frustrating when problem solving threads die without the root causes and resolutions being divulged...

I tightened the belt a tad yesterday per Matt's suggestion and the belt slap went away. There's still a clunk at idle that seems to emanate from the clutch or gearbox but it's much better than before. Good enough to ride I think, once the temp drops below 100.

Thanks for asking.

How’s progress with the bike and e start ?

Still chasing an electrical gremlin - randomly blowing the main fuse. Made too many changes at the same time I guess.

E-start is flawless. Life changing for an old man. All buttoned up...

... and detailed. We're going trophy hunting today -
