I've just splashed out and bought a set of unused 32mm Premiums that were advertised in out local rag. Turns out that the seller had owned his Mk3 since he bought it new, and had done 230,000km on it before he sold it earlier this year - lots of interesting stories there :)

Anyway, he bought these carbs from Norvil - he had bought lots of stuff there over the years it seems, so they should have known him quite well.

When he recieved the carbs, he found that they were not jetted correctly for his MK3 (N0. 3 slide, 230 main jets, straight spray tube, 2 ring needles, no. 17 pilot jet), so he contacted Norvil to ask about exchanging them for the correct set.

The Bearded One told him that since he did not explicitly state in his order thatthey were for a MK3, this was not possible, it was his own fault (why does this sound familiar?). Bearing in mind that the poor bloke had spent a very considerable amount of dosh with the Bearded One over the last 30 years or so, it's not surprising that he was disappointed.
What's really amazing though is that he then bought a second set, this time specifying carefully that they were for a MK3 from Norvil again! I believe he received the correct items, but I simply do not understand anybody being treated this was and then going back and buying again. Perhaps this explains how Norvil manages to stay in business?

The good news is that for what I paid for the new unused carbs, I can order the correct bits for my non-standard bike and still be at slightly less than the new price (and helped out this other bloke).

I've just stripped and checked the carbs, no swarf or other bits, just the float levels needed adjusting. Time will tell what changes will be required, but I'm quite happy so far.

“but I simply do not understand anybody being treated this was and then going back and buying again.”

Sometimes, we are just too busy, or unable to tolerate the dullards and we simply say feckit, make the pain stop, open the wallet. (Generally speaking, not directed at the vendor mentioned above.)

As much as I love my Norton I would give it up and throw the towel in if the only spares available were from "the beard"
I am not at all surprised that the carbs he sent were wrong and it was all the customers fault!!

I know Burlen can make the odd mistake annoyingly in one carb of the pair, but many mistakes in both carbs - best of luck, sounds like some botched and put together junk that someone previous did not want.

What's it to do with Burlen?
The carbs were ordered from Norvil and the buyer didn't specify they were for an 850 Mk3 so it's hardly surprising they weren't jetted correctly.

I agree that one cannot blame Norvil for not supplying the correct carbs (although Henrik was on record with them as a frequent buyer of Mk3 bits, it would have been good service to have at least queried the order), but the comment was more about the total unwillingness to work together with the customer to fix the problem by exchanging jets & slides etc. I have not had this experience with either AN or RGM, which is part of the reason I buy from them and not from the beard.

What's also a bit odd is that the fuel banjo's for both carbs are single sided. While the double banjos are a bit of a PIA to replace in-situ, the inconvenience of runing out of fuel with no reserve is far worse, so I'm wondering why these were supplied.

How are pairs of Premiers normally suplied, single or double banjos?

Depends what make, model and year they are intended for.

For instance, pre-Mk2/Mk3 carbs had single banjos because they had the 'H' type fuel line:

850 Mk2/Mk3 fuel line with 180 banjos:

There are various other (65, 150, etc. degree) double banjos for other models:

You have to remember the way the beards mind works
By refusing to work with with a long term Customer IE exchanging the carbs or just the jets etc because the customer didn't state what model he had
He gained another sale

The Norvil website does specify for 32mm 932/35 & 932/36 MK2A / 3 carbs please call us to buy this item so i guess they will supply jetted with correct banjo`s as required

the stock 32mm premier carbs are supplied by burlen with 3 slide 220 main 106 needle and 17 pilot with single banjo

it is often the case the buyer is involved in a lenghthy restoration and may have sat on them for some time , so if he ordered in error and failed to check on arrival
has he been mis treated ?

Can't imagine a customer not saying what bike it was for. ''I want a set of carbs for a Commando'' should be followed by ''what model''
Sounds like more bearded waffle, if it was a written order fax/email and not clear by the customer, again the question should have been asked.

I notice Norvil list "PREMIUM RANGE" also "Geniune Amal" and "Wassell".

The Premiums are cheaper than "Genuine Amal"!

Are these "Premium" carbs actually Amal Premiers or something else?

(In which case my apologies for editing the thread title from Premium to Premier)

I thought the Wassell top spec item was called 'evolution' to distinguish it from the standard offering.

At this point is Burlen just selling off old stock? I cannot see the point in buying the unimproved type carbs. After all they are not that much
cheaper.

It would be interesting to actually audit the transaction.
750 or 850 32mm carbs, balance pipes = cutaway spray tubes?
How is MKIII any different from other balance pipe 850?
Black caps or like my 5 mile E-start-peashooters from new...?

Why do so many people have to "fix" their new premiers? ie idle jets?

There are four* different specifications of '850' carb.
*(Five specs. according to Burlen but I don't recall anyone saying their (Mk3?) Commando had (original) 932/42 and 932/43 ("200" main jet) carbs.

I'd only be convinced of that if you were there when the crate was opened.

Why do so many people have to "fix" their new premiers? ie idle jets?

Hopefully they won't now they (850) come with '19' pilot jets.

In this one thread you guys completely rule out my ever making a purchase from this outfit due to this individuals sorry treatment of a long time customer. I don't care if the dude failed to provide all of the correct info or not...Also the buyer....well...going ahead and buying the correct pair from the jerk. ?? Far more of an understanding & forgiving soul than I.
I'd be looking for beard couties falling on the box after the coining of the name too...Even more worries compounding an imaginary transaction.
