Running rich & temp lack of gears?

Agreed. Just use it to start it, then hold the idle up a little till it warms.
Let us know how it comes out so we can all learn.

Luke, I have replied to your email, hope you get it. Old fart techno fear here. I run concentrics but maybe two heads can figure it out. Ade

I've just kicked her over so you can see how she is. I thought a video would do a better job of showing how she's running & you can all lend your seasoned ears.

^ Mixture screw is 1 turn out.

^ & at 1 1/2 turns out with the idle sitting at roughly 750rpm.

How does she sound?

I'll suit up & take her out for a quick ride.

Not sure what the seasoned boys think but idle for me needs to be more like 1100. My failed email said I can get over Wednesday or Thursday as not working even if only to give some moral support and a extra ear. Not sure if he still lives here but a NOC chap with a commando used to live at the back of rockinghams shop here in Southam. I believe they meet at the Folly in napton on Sunday mornings. I got your mail so fire one back if you want me to pop over. Obviously computer illiterate here.

Back from a 10 mile ride! She cut out once at the first junction (managed to kick her whilst still sat on her) & didn't cut out again after that!

Seems responsive through the revs but perhaps a little soft, I've got a chap popping over tomorrow night who will hopefully help me fine tune her.

Tweaked the idle to ~1,000-1,100k once fully warmed up, which she's running at in the video above.

I'm still dripping fuel from the overflow but Steve has posted me out a new float valve so I'm hoping that'll sort that.

Most successful ride I've had since I inherited her! Well chuffed. But I'm certain there's still room for improvement. I'll see what you lot make of the latest video ^

Oh & I'm not running with an air filter in the videos above, which was quite possibly a contributing factor as to why she wouldn't idle once stopped when the K&N was fitted.

I'll prob just buy a new one to be honest.

& flicking the enrichener off as soon as she's fired up instead of half a mile down the road.

HAPPY AS LARRY!

I would, however, suggest you reposition the rear brake cable correctly, over the Z-plate, not under, otherwise you (will) have a suspension operated rear brake!

Running rich & temp lack of gears?

Sounded better at 1 1/2.
Need to adjust the mixture as it is running and listen to the change.

Running without an air-cleaner while dripping petrol from the carb overflow, is not good. But at least you might have warm legs on a cold day. I once had that experience and a nice man stopped his car and helped me extinguish the blaze.

Just a thought, was looking at your rats nest thread earlier. In the pic I can't see an earth wire to the head or head steady. Various posts on here suggest that can be bad news for Boyer's and cause misfiring etc.

Just wrestling with a misfire after getting mine back together and have realised it doesn't have one either, hoping for an easy fix - I know...

Blimey, good spot! Not my doing but will put right tomorrow night.

Daft, I know. Will be ordering a new air filter tonight & rectifying the overflow drip before I take her out again.

There was one on the old harness & there's one on the new harness too. I think it's making good contact but I'll double check.

If you have got the idle right, you should need choke to start the bike. And when you start it, let it run on the choke with the throttle closed, until it warms up. When you take the choke off, it should idle happily without you touching the throttle. The idle setting should not affect what happens when you ride the bike, that is when the needles and needle jets operate. The main jets only operate at full throttle.

What we call a choke on a mikuni is actually an enrichening jet, you do not touch the throttle when starting and once started you turn it off asap it dumps too much juice into the engine

Looks like you are getting very close to having it run properly and as soon as you have done that and everything is working fine you can move on to the next stage and fit a pair of carburettors !!
That will give you a full commando experience
Cheers
