71 Installed new throttle cable s adjusted as per bushmans carb tuning secrets amal 930 carbs set flop to 80 thou. No tickle. Everything was fine before throttle cable broke.

Check gas cap, I had a similar problem with a Triumph the other day, the new ethanol petrol gets extra sticky when it dries out & had blocked the vent hole in the cap, worth a try!

Sounds like you reset the floats too low for the tickler button to engage them/press them down. Either set the floats higher - some folks like them level with the top of the bowl. Or adjust the ticklers so they project further into the carb bodies.

If you screw a self tapped into the bottom of the tickler split pin that makes it much easier to adjust length.

We'll someone is bound to ask so I might as well do it now.

"As the float bowl is at an angle is that at the front, middle or back?"

As of 21 Oct 1989, after a lengthy and detailed reverse engineering exercise, I determined the fuel level is measured, IMO mid way, which is inline/parallel with the spray tube/needle jet. The fuel should be 6 to 8/32 below the BODY of carb. That places the fuel level within the machined .107" bore of the needle jet (which is within the carb body, not the bowl). The fuel should be set according to the bottom of the meniscus as seen in the sighting tubing. Since then, I've never had any discussions or convincing evidence to change my method.

Since then, the biggest carb issues have always been E-10 poisoning effects.

E-10 poisoning...I like that term...It has a ring to it. Too bad Speedy Alka Seltzer can't help with that heartburn.

I spent some time last weekend setting my float heights and trying to get the fuel level to the Amal recommended 4.3 - 6.3mm (similar to range above). Even moving the needle valve inserts a little I struggled to get the fuel level high enough with the floats being too high (flush with the top of float bowl to get 6mm fuel level). At that level I put the bowls on the bike and when I tickled it the needles can't be shutting off as I got over flow.

Will have another go this weekend but any thoughts appreciated.

BTW - carbs are new. Also have new stay-up floats with new Viton tipped ali needles. All measurements done with float bowl top horizontal (off bike) and with the Amal drain plug with spigot and pipe.

No doubt I'll get it sorted this weekend as the heat wave looks like it's about to be replaced with a deluge!

Would that be the same for Downdraught heads on pre-Commandos like my Dommie as the angle is steeper than the Commando.

Either float height or tickle pin needs adjusting, if blocked bleed hole you will probably see fuel pissing out the bottom of the air filter if you hold the tickler long enough. As far as float levels go I have got good (enough) results by eye balling float top just below float bowl face. If I had to quantify then like 1 or 2 mm. I used to lose sleep over this, but I moved on.

Yes the fuel position measurement is for the level within the needle jet. That is the point of applied vacuum on the fuel. My clear tubes runs right up by the idle speed screws.

Commando carbs being about 10 degrees tilt and a feather bed twin is about 18 degrees.
