In the interest of covering my bases I found a small black set screw on the bike bench.

Probably something like 10/32 or so. It could have come from anywhere but I’m just checking it’s not important.

I can’t think of anywhere on the engine there a set screw with an Allen head.

And it’s not a part I put on the engine and came off.

Sure I might be paranoid but I think I’ve earned that paranoia.

Yep better pull it a part again, but really don't you hate it when that happens when you find a screw on the bench and then thinking where the hell did that come from, but owning my bike for over 43 years and a few pull downs with my motor and others I know every nut, bolt and little things that go into a Norton motor, but finding something like that does make you think

i could think of 2 locations. although i don't know what size they may be.

1 is the set screw for the oil gallery in the crank right cheek.
2 could be in the oil gallery leading from the oil pump in the timing cover
3 do you have the mk3 isolatics adjuster? could be a set screw for there..

I think it's bigger the 10-24, more like 1/4-20.

The first time we noticed it is when we pulled the engine out. The timing cover was already on.

I'll check the isolastics just to be sure.

Picture coming soon.

It doesn't look like a part that belongs to your motor.

Kommando had the only possibility.

Do you have raw video of putting the crank back together? You could review that to see if you caught the grub screw detail. Or missed it...

I’m just saying there’s no way the crank screw could have gotten there. Never had the crank near the lift.

Oh, on the lift. You said bench in your original post so I thought the construction video might show it. If it was on the lift I would definitely look elsewhere.
