I installed some lower throttle cables that I had laying around the shop. They seem too tight. Even with the adjusters completely screwed into the top of the carb, there is almost zero free play. Are there different versions of the lower cables? Could these be choke cables?. Can someone tell me the free wire length on a set.

MK1 concentric bare cables-lowers
throttle body 10-3/8" Choke body 10-5/8"
exposed cable 3-5/8" exposed cable 3-7/8"

I was going to add this in the under tank wiring mess thread...
My throttle splitter is on the left side of the backbone yet I make the cross over right cable lower 1" longer
Then
My choke splitter is on the right side of the backbone and I make the left carb choke cable 1" longer than the right side

extra cross over length aids in keeping the splitters parallel with the backbone tube instead of the splitters wanting to point outward
A little extra setup but works great.

Years ago I had some genuine in the bag AN throttle lowers that I discovered the exposed length was way to short and even with the adjusters ALL the way in, it wanted to idle at 3000 plus.
I ended taking/making all the data for MK1 and MK2 cables including the cross over technique.
I then for a while was a cable makin fool until I got it all sorted out...
To be fair, at the time AN was BSA Regal.

I got caught out with that one once when replacing cables new cables from my local British bike shop in Brisbane BJs when I put them on the idle was up around 3000 rpms thought I was going silly in the head till I pull them off and put beside my old cables, to short, found out some one mixed them up with Triumph cables, well that was their excuse anyway ended up getting the right ones for free for my troubles.

The exposed cable lengths are the same for ALL 900 series MK1
It does not matter what engine or chassis they are on.
Only thing that matters is the bare cable body must hook up from the standard amal splitter to the carb.
FWIW
There is a set of different dimensions for MK2's... which I will use on my 34mm MK2's on my "combat" atlas.
WOW looked at the date on this 4 page research notes... 5 Aug 1995.
