Just cleaning up my new acquisition when I came across this ring thing ??

Pulled front end apart to property clean the wheel and noticed this ring, can’t seem to see it in the fork schematic. Looks like a dust or oil scraper/seal

What why where ?..

It’s for adjusting the suspension. Shows how much the forks are compressing. Move it to the the top go for a ride and observe how far the ring has moved down as you brake, adjust compression to be sure you won’t bottom out.

Ok more Questions !! ;)

Just looking under the Tank as the bikes stood for a couple of years, noticed that the rocker/lifter cover has 2 vents and they are factory blanked off ??

Are these breathers or un-used oil returns ???

Part of the breather system that Norton has played around with over the years. Their current design has a rocker cover with no vents. Older bikes had them blocked off as part of the fix.

Ok so Bunnings trip to by a Tig welder and make a weekend out of plugging holes to get rid of the hideous tie wrapped plugs......GREAT !!

Fark ocd is a hassle...

Thanks

Ahh I see, good research.

I'm finding that this Bike ive bought has a complete "working project" aspect.

Its a 2015 C/R, Motad de-cat pipes, seems to run/idle OK so after reading your mind boggling ECU tweaking excise, I'm hoping it was re-mapped by Fraser's when the pipes went on.

I think your right in both principle aspects, 1. it wants to breath 2. putting so much oil back into the intakes cant be right.

The guy I bought it of didn't seem to have much care for it, the "Baby bottle" was half full of water and oil and i needed to add 500ml to get it back to full, as its only done 340Klms from new where did half a liter of oil go ?

Anyways, I have ordered all the Ignition parts from Richard One07 and the filler breather so Bikes on stands atm, Ill think on your oil venting ideas.

Thanks !!

If you zoom in, rear left shock top mount, curious single pair cable with connector tucked away in the tube ?? connected to nothing...... any ideas as to its purpose ??

This ones more annoying, whilst re-routeing the external battery charging cable across the top of the air box I found the air temp sensor....... and note either side a nice puddle of water !!

Never ridden in the wet and washed a couple of weeks ago. Note sure if this is a known thing but i'm sure the sensor is going to fail eventually dipped in water half its life.

Are you sure that connector stuck up the frame tube isn’t the factory fitted battery charging lead?

Bikes come prewired for a CTEK charger and thats the pigtail for it.

Yes , the wires running to the top shock mount are the battery charger connector. When washing the bike do not direct water to the top of the air box area . water will collect in the well where the air temp sensor is. What I do is to use compressed air to blow it out and then a small touch of silicone spray directed with small tube on the nozzle in there for anti corrosion. You should silicone grease all of your connectors exposed to the weather especially .

The 961 was originally designed as a carb-ed machine by Kenny Dreer. No air temp sensors were required. So the addition of EFI required “adapting” the airbox to work with an air temp sensor. You’re looking at the solution. Water is known to collect around the sensor when washing the bike or riding in the rain.

Stuffing a paper towel in the space after washing the bike will remove the water.

It should be checked periodically.

All this stuff was found out and reported by Richard-7 years ago . Which I now fondly call David Coote Trip #1 report and findings .

Before you do... I got rid of Norton’s fix and now use those two breather fittings. No more ugly air/oil separator. No oil going into the air box and no need for the plastic oil collection bottle.

Thread on what I did here https://www.accessnorton.com/NortonCommando/unraveling-the-961-part-two-oil-in-the-air-box.27345/

Hello iwilson , Where does the output of your oil separator now go ? Brass barb open to air under the seat ? Or does that go back to the air box ? Do you get any oil in the bowl ? Lastly have you tested at sustained high speed ? Thanks !

Ok so there are 2 Charging cables, as I mentioned found this one when I was moving the one that was tied to the clutch hydraulic cable

Yeah sorry to re-hash old news, its all new to me, I have read some of the sticky's form Richard re what to do with your new 961 and have adhered to most.

Just vents to the air - no sign of any oil getting out. Mostly water in the bowl with just enough oil vapour to turn it milky. I could run a tube back to the airbox - but no point.

Yes have gone north of 100mph, but haven't gone for more than a 20 min rip around local roads as it's not registered at the moment - winter here and registration is expensive!
