Oil cooler MOUNTING locations/designs on Commandos, let’s see ‘em

Thats the best place for it and is where I put my Lochart oil cooler for last 42 years, only one bolt to mount it and has free unrestricted air flow over the front guard and under the bottom triple tree, down low and you get restricted air flow from your front wheel and guard.

Yes, that’s why an extrusion or billet is used. I wouldn’t dream of using a tube and foil design in that location. The fins on an extruded design, compared to a foil and tube design, can take small stone hits and they even shield the drillings through which the oil passes.

Mine is the Hyde bottle-brush type between the downtubes with a thermostat behind the engine--it actuates at the first stoplight after any freeway run when the temperature is over 50F

In the ‘70s I got hold of a Trident/Rocket III cooler and installed it up high on down tubes under steering head but I found that at full fork compression the front fender crashed into the cooler. That was on a ‘71 Roadster.

My Lochart cooler sits up hi and has been there for over 40 years and has never hit the front fender, but the Trident coolers are a lot thicker and would sit out more, but the forks compressing that far up???

Yep, fender crashed into and dented the fender . . . . Griffith Park, lots of hard downhill braking often over bumps, Being young and dumb, and cheap, once the fender was bashed and the cooler not leaking, I ran it that way for years.
