As there title suggests, I’m intrigued to know what other 961 owners are habitually revving their motors to.

I’m not asking what you revved it to once ‘just to see’ but what what revs folk are regularly using...

6500 RPM if faster progress is desired . But sustaining 6500 in 5th is a bit too fast wouldn't you say ?

I’m thinking more about acceleration than cruising speed...

I find myself seldom below 4,500. But I also seldom take it much above 6,000 as the power seems to level off and there’s not much point to the extra revs (only going by the ‘arse dyno’ here tho).

So I was jus’ wondrin’ what’s others do. And if folk thought regular 4,500 to 6,000 riding was stressing the motor? It doesn’t feel stressed, seems to love it!

I do 1st and 2nd gear blasts to rev limiter for fun on hiway entrance ramps.
If I ride with sportbike buddies, I cruise around 5200 for periods - 10 15 minutes or so, of course where permissible.
But without a real fairing (bikini, or half fairing) cruising about 5400 rpm (90+) becomes very tiring.
above 5000 RPM my 961 is smooth, and throttle response is great.

These crankcases on these 961 motors are heavy duty and built like brick sh**houses, and crankshaft is stout as well.
I seriously doubt that you can do much damage to these engines as configured (80HP) by extended hi speed cruise.

Dreer designed these engines to have none of the weaknesses of the old Commando motors.
He always admired the ruggedly strong Harley engine case design.
A lot of that beef went into the 961 case design.
Serious boat anchor material!:D

Like you FE,
5000 - 6000 (closer to 6) before changing up and 4500 - 5000 ish while cruising otherwise it is hard work constantly changing gear!

1st gear usually around 4000 as I don't like irritating the neighbourhood, but once on the move probably 4k to 6k depending on the mood, although I did nudge 6500 the other day..... getting closer to the redline :)

hmmmmmm…...boat anchor...….I DO have a boat.....insurance would far exceed resale......hmmmm

Entering the highway on these excruciatingly short entrance ramps on Long Island NY, I'll pop it to 6500 or so. I cruise generally at 4500 to 4800. Anything under 3800 and I'm downshifting to 4th. There are the rare occasions I'm taking a gentle cruise at 4200. I tried to convince Richard that nobody obeys the 55 mph speed limit in NY, but being in a foreign country, I saw his point.;)

Short shift out of first and seldom above 5000rpm in the higher gears.
Not much in the way of highways around here, a good chunk of time in 3rd and 4th gear corners. :)

Anyone with smashed/cracked crankcases can recycle it as quoted here!

so far, at 500 miles, I am keeping it below 4500. Roll on the first service, followed by throttle!!
