Hi all,
The chrome plated (or is it stainless?) chainguard on my 50th Anniversay Cali has snapped on the bend where the front tab bolts to the swinging arm. I cleaned it up, rivetted a bent replacement bracket on there and that snapped first ride. Three questions:
1. Is it the vibes as I cant see where any load could be being applied?
2. Should I mount the replacement one on a couple of tap washers?
3. Anyone else had this issue, what did you do?

Cheers

As Mark says, warranty issue -the Cali’s only started getting out the door towards the end of Autumn.

Same issue, at about 900 miles. Rob at HQ sent a replacement

Yes had this and did fit a replacement in carbon fibre. Never had any problem with the chain guard since then.

Anyone know why this happens? Is there an alignment issue? The chaingaurd is under no load and carries no weight. If it’s not under under stress / tension (do to an alignment issue) I can’t see why it should break?

if it is stainless, it could have work-hardened, partly when first bent, then vibration?? Was it ever product tested ?

Yes , very common mine too. . The steel will break from vibration. If you leave the bolts loose , but loctite you can go longer without breakage. But you may hear the guard rattle during idle. Get the carbon fiber and install with rubber washer under stainless washer. Dont make bolts too tight , use loctite blue on fasteners . No more problems !

Mine snapped. Had rust under it. Unusual since it had never been wet. Get the carbon fiber and be done with it. More traditional looking but so much more substantial and impervious to moisture. Norton was kind enough to just charge me the balance of the price.

Another 961 owner I met told me to occasionally check under the carbon fibre mudguard (rear) as it is a great water trap leading to rust on the swing arm

The other items that brake/ crack often is the battery rack (holster) and the metal license plate holder.

Hello Richard , Are you referring to item #34 in this drawing ?

Chainguard snapping

I guess it is #34 he refers to. I had to let it shorten. Gives less vibrations and is still compatible with the size of Swiss license plate...
No more issues with this part.

Mine has not broken yet. Could this part have been updated by Norton since 2012 or 2013 ?

No, there is a full metal holder. 2 styles. CF and a METAL one. The metal ones fatigue and crack just like the battery cradle and the chain guard and older cat bracket.

A true fact - check this y'all - saw this on mine after 3k or so. As I commute on the bike I spray acf-50 around liberally. If you're into high adrenaline sports then allow some to get onto the brake discs.....

Penetrating Dinitrol should also be good.

Mine is metal and honestly, until recently haven't inspected it. It does show some corrosion and my license plate is cracked practically all the way across. Finally put a backing plate behind it.

Thanks for the replies, apologies, I don't check on here very often.
I have a warranty replacement coming through the system but will consider the Carbon option next time.

Resurrecting this thread because I just lost the chain guard on my 2014 Sport. Snapped of at the front support, right at the bend. Rear rubber insert style fastener just pulled out. Only a hole left there.

Anyone know of a replacement source, plastic, metal, or CF? Guess I should have bought the CF item when it was still available.:(

If not, I guess it's fabrication time again.

Ken
