What’s the fastest you’ve had your 961?

Today here in Michigan USA it was 45°F and sunny, so I took my Dominator Naked out to meet a old friend I haven’t seen for many years. We met up on our bikes and talked awhile and the subject of speed came up.

He asked how fast my bike was. I told him honestly I don’t know. I also have a Commando SF and I’ve taken that up to 100 mph but that’s about it.
I told him I’d find out on the way home.

Well I did as I promised and once I got near my house (smooth straight rural road) I stretched her legs out. I took my Dominator to 125 mph and backed off. Not sure how much more she has but that was enough for me as I felt like a parachute and my hands were frozen from not wearing gloves and already riding for 40 miles.

Does anyone know what the top speed is?

125mph with no gloves?

Wow!

Back on topic, I’m kinda like you, I’ve had mine up to somewhere above the ton several times but have never genuinely gone for a proper top speed test.

Rob claimed to have seen 130mph...

A one time only disappointing needles width over 125 mph. If the speedo has the usual optimism of most bikes then maybe not even 120???. I need to fit a Pie Restrictor and an Integrity Filter to up the performance but they seem to be on indefinite back order. With 2000mls on the clock it always sounds like it's about to Grenade at 40mph, but bizarrely the motor feels smooth and more refined at 100+ than at 40!!!.

Its not a super light bike... and its got perhaps 70rwhp (give or take)... so 120 something MPH would be about right wouldn't it?

Lol.

She was still pulling and had more in her but I didn’t lol

I had my Sport up to 128 with room to spare. That said, I'd be lucky if I were doing 120 given the margin of error on that clock. Folks here claim a 5mph error. I claim more like 10% across the board. Commuters don't cruise at 80 here in NY.

Stuart Garner did + 129 on the Bonneville Salt 2 way average recorded . Other magazines maybe MCN say 130MPH tested . That would be about right with the rpm limiter cutting it off at 7200 rpm. 7000 RPM in 5th gear is achievable . Probably every 961 they make will do that.

What I found with my bike : Using a cell phone speedometer app in a tank bag . 70 MPH indicated = 67 to 68 MPH. 80 indicated = 75 to 76 indicated. This is with stock 18/50 gearing . My speed sensor is on the tranny not the front wheel like New Bikes. Also , with a higher gearing I was running 18/47 my cell phone app and speedo agreed 50 to 85 mph . I did not test further because to much traffic. I would love to be able to get the freedom to go flat out .

YES , I sense the same thing. More of the motor is happiest under more throttle .

I have no complaints. I love the bikes. Not a single issues with either of them yet. Next time I’m out I’ll try again.
I have a 9 mile section of road here that’s full of twisties and a long straight stretch. All rural and open. For January we been having unseasonaly warm weather. Love it.

Hello Again Voodoo , Are you doing this with the open megas ? I wonder why I couldn't hear you in Wisconsin ! Did you get the mapping straight for those open pipes ?

LOL I’ll start it now to see if you can hear me.
When I took delivery of my Dominator from Indian of Orange County I had them load the tune for the megaphones. When I received the bike I installed the megaphones.

In 5th gear as read from speedo , if your ECU lets it spin to 8000
3000 rpm = 50 mph
4000 rpm = 67 mph
5000 rpm = 84 mph
6000 rpm =101 mph
7000 rpm = 118 mph
8000 rpm = 135 mph

The question is how close to 8000 rpm will you get before rev limited ?

You hit 135 @ 8K on your dials? Pretty ballsy. I was still climbing and don't really remember what my tach said at 128, but I have hit the rev limiter a few times during acceleration at mid 7s. I don't usually rev that high. I'm shifting before 6 grand in most cases.

No I didn't . This is what I would expect if that RPM was to be reached. Ive only gone a bit over 120 mph.

I think at 128 mph you are very close to your mid 7's rev limit .

The throttle was pinned but the engine still had a bit left. She was climbing. I'm not into to beating on her and/or winding up in jail. 15 seconds at best. Had an open faced and felt like my head was going to get ripped off.
