De-Muting Peashooters?

Wanting to "upgrade" the sound & breathing on my '74 850 with the welded in peashooter mutes....pretty tiny openings really. I just scored some really sweet non-balance pipe original headers ($20 cdn!!!). Since my peashooters are not in great condition (scraps, dings, scars etc), I'm thinking I could try grinding/hole-sawing out the mutes to hear how they sound.

Any problem with trying that (not sure if any internal baffle/mesh mounts up inside that area)?

If I like the new sound/breathing, would likely split for nicer looking cans at a later date.
 
We used to do that all the time with the restricted peashooters back in the day. For that matter, the local Norton dealer would do that for a minimal charge if you asked them to. I don't recall what size hole saw it required but we used whatever size it was that would just cover the mute. If you did it properly, what was left was the original-style peashooter. There was no baffle or other muffler parts affected. The mute was simply a piece that was inserted into a stock peashooter.
 
Kewl. Will take a close look and see what I can do. Might try with a angle grinder (have one on a cutoff jig) or dremel tool wheel as not sure how a hole saw will behave without a small diameter centering hole to hold steady on. I see sparks in my future!

Just be ready for loud. The peashooters I recently bought are straight through with perforated walls and no restriction in the end. They are very loud. I like people to know I'm coming, but not in the next county :)
 
My pipes ,one say Campbell’s on side the other is an exact match from BritCycle’s storage have kinda waffle pattern on inside wall , no mute .... loud but not near as loud as my Duc with open air box and Termi pipes ... in the habit of always wearing ear plugs ....

Yes, I ride with ear plugs primarily due to wind noise (helmet doesn't do a very effective job). I've been up close/following other Commando's without balance pipes, mutes and they were not bad sounding at all. My bike...you can have a pleasant conversation standing beside it when its idling. Not much of a bark when you turn the tap on either!

Emgo Dunstall style mufflers are essentially the same as the original Dunstalls. Acquire a set, remove all glass packing and hacksaw off interior perforated tubing of pipe, reassemble remaining end cap with muffler body, and you'll have the sound "upgrade" you seek.
