I have my new Genuine Smiths electronic speedo on my bike. My problem is that when I am trying to calibrate it, I go through the setup until I should be getting 00000 but what I actually get is *0000 and no matter how many times I push the button or for how long, it stays that way. Riding the bike sees the speedo needle go right around the dial and stay there. Solutions please?

Not much help i'm sorry as i have forgotten the specifics but i do remember almost pulling my hair out before i got the calibration to work.
The obvious question is that the positive earth note at the end of the instructions has been followed if it applies?

Can't help at all but I guess I'll have an interesting time when I install my E-Smiths next month...;)

I looked through the complicated Smiths instructions several times and figured it was easier to simplify things by writing my own step by step

While I do Negative grounds systems on my machines, the calibration is the same for a positive ground

If you don's see the pulses logging on the digital display as you are riding when doing the calibration, there may be a problem with the pick up

Good stuff Matt!

FWIW, since I don't use it for its intended purpose, I plan to use the kill button on the OEM lucas switches for the odometer reset/ground switch.

I was planning to do the one wheel-revolution/calculation thing. Doesn't that work very well?

Thanks Matt! I'll give it another try today.

Mike,

I have never done the static programming myself, so I don't know how well it would work. Whenever you deal with these pulse operated units, they seem to like a lot of input to operate well. That said, I like the idea of running the bike and getting a few thousand pulses so that the speedo can calculate a good average. The Smiths speedos have been very accurate after programming them like this.

Matt

Drive to set over a mile. It doesn't always take at various stages and you have to start again. It would also help if they came waterproofed to the lowest Chinese standards.

So water ingress was a problem?
How did you solve that?

Funny you should ask, Rob. After seven hours in pouring rain going up to Sydney, the speedo copped a gutsfull of water and promptly died. The solution? I bought a new one, as in my dealings with AN, I have discovered the foolishness of trying to deal with them regarding faults. Once bitten and all that.

Hey Fullauto, has there been a final verdict on your cam and followers?

I did the using the wheel circumference method on my front wheel speedo drive. (Yamaha twin disc wheel) Couldn,t find a measured mile marker near me but once the ultra confusing instructions were sorted, worked perfectly with the supplied sender.
Fit and forget and very accurate with mph and mileage.
If you want to do it this way, I,ll find my data as an example when you get around to doing yours and post it.

That would be great, thanks! It'll be the 2nd week of Dec when I get back to the Norton. I'll let you know! :)

Mike, the biggest piece of advice I can give is... good mental preparation!

I’m quite serious. Fitting these is a very long, fiddly, time consuming, mentally challenging job.

But, so long as you take your time, check and double check you’re using the correct diagram for your bike. And check and double check all your connections. And follow the set up instructions properly, you will be fine.

I’ve fitted two sets now and both were perfect from the get go. So it can’t be that difficult !
