Evenin’ all

This may be a stupid question but...

Why do none of my tools fit the fasteners on my engine? I feel like I’m taking crazy pills!

Do I need Whitworth wrenches?

If you want to delve into the engine in any depth you will need to consider more than hand tools.
Without some of the specialised pullers etc it would be a PITA with increased risk of breaking things.

I have way more Whitworth tools than I will ever use or need.
Send me a PM and I'll send you some sockets and wrenches.

@Ironracer a lot of the fasteners on the engine are BSF and whitworth, and remain unchanged since the first Norton heavy twins from the 1950s

On the rest of the bike, most was changed to AF (UNC and UNF) as this was the time when the rest of the British motor industry were moving over.

Invest in a nice 3/8 drive set of whitworth sockets from someone like Koken to get you up and running. They are not Snap-On expensive, but are well made and will last you well.

I have found that cheaper whitworth tools from the likes of tooline and silverline are not a good fit on the fasteners, so are a waste of time and money.

Later on you can expand your collection with some decent spanners - Britool and King Dick are decent quality and not too expensive!

Wrench sizes?

Overhaul tools are in the manual in the back and they are often available from Norton suppliers now. Whit and BS are the same
wrenches just called out in different sizes so keep that in mind. Stateside, Snap-on used to make both wrenches and sockets
but I think they have been discontinued. Look on ebay. However they are not flank drive.

Thanks all. Between Mr. Rick and then my mum bringing some of my dad's old tools when she visits from England in a couple of week I'll be all set.

Yeah, that gtiller fellow is Far Too Organized !;)
I wouldn't have the guts to invite him to my own garage...
Here's my Norton drawer:

My father told me many times, Don't be cheap on tools. Spent the money, you only have to buy a good tool once! I've learned the hard way (many times on many things) he was so right!
