Iridium spark plugs (2008)

Spark jumps more easily from sharp points than from dull ones. That's the fact that makes precious metal plugs more desirable. Weak ignition system can get by with a fine wire precious metal plug when it does not with a coarse steel central electrode. This is especially so under high "spark quenching" pressures. Then, steel melts lower than platinum, platinum melts lower than iridium.

I ran the ngk iridiums [ mentioned above ] in my commando on a 3200 mile round trip and was disappointed that they started behaving like lazy plugs before I got home [ back firing through the carbs which causes the slides to break up. i have used new N7Y plugs since as at $1.5o per plug compared to $41.00 per plug was a no brainer. I was getting between 55 and 60 mp [ imperial ] gallon and they went black on the unleaded fuel we have over here. I have since sand blasted them clean but not refitted them yet????

My bike dosent start that well partly because I can barely kick it over,
What type of plug is best for a big spark and easier starting,
I have Lucas Rita and a pair of concentrics
It starts fine with a good kick or starter rollers, cheers

Dare I suggest points ignition?

Tri spark, iridium plugs and a RGM T160 style starter.

The Tri spark and iridiums should make it a first kick starter.

The T160 lever makes it an easier kick.

Sorted.

I'm a bit put off by tri spark to be honest I've heard of too many failures with them
I have extended my Kickstart by 90 mm
I can only kick with my left foot nowadays , currently waiting to see a knee surgeon,I think I'll try the iridium plugs , cheers

Check this out.
Google " Sunset Motors, Kenosha, "
Go to his website.
Compression release.
Not saying that this is for you, but it deserves a look.

that looks interesting iv'e only ever seen those on harleys before cheers

As a footnote I had been thinking about a de compressor along the lines of a Yamaha X's 650 one that's built into the rocker cover and holds the exhaust rocker open, not sure how successful these were ! Any body know?

Time for some Alton therapy baz!

There are more out there that haven’t failed than have Baz!

And their starting and idling function is fantastic.

First one I ever had was on an 850cc T160 Trident, Phil pick fitted it for me, when he’d done, he started it on the kick start by hand (electric start removed by me) !

That replaced a Lucas Rita set up. Very, very, noticeable difference. Until Tri Spark, that was my favourite.

Jus’ sayin’...

Yep I realize that but I'll more than likely go for the cnw one to be honest
I built this bike 20 years ago from parts using the lightest components I could get IE wheels yokes footrests etc all that stuff weighs a ton on a stock commando
And now contemplating an electric foot so all that weight goes back on!!
But I've had 20 years of a fine running/handling bike so I can't complain
I'm just glad there are electric start conversions out there!!!!
My t160 is on the button and my r100 and my A10 kick starts easily since I had the mag Rebuilt , there's a lot to be said for a magneto
Half a kick and away it goes

It's worth thinking about I think most of the failures I've read about are the type with the CDI built into the timing cover??
How exactly would Tri spark ignition improve starting?
I'm a complete novice at electronic ignition

The only problem with Iridium is the cost. Due to the fact that finicky Amal carbs and points ignition tend to foul plugs sooner or later, it is easier to replace when the plug is cheap rather than try to clean. The old way of media blasting the plug insulator is not recomended anymore due to the residual grit it leaves.

Just fitted iridium plugs,I have twin concentrics and lucas Rita, can't say I've noticed any difference but I shall carry some spare plugs after reading this
I fitted iridium plugs to my Trident last year and it made no difference at all to that bike either!!
Starting to think I'm a fashion victim!!! ??

On my R100GS it made a slight difference in low RPM tractability. I have not tried them in my Norton for the above reason.
Would be interested in hearing if anyone here still media blasts clean their sooty plugs with the specialty plug blaster tool.

I cannot imagine how one cd keep the recommended sharp edges by using a media blaster.
What's wrong with a brass wire brush?
