I often thought about bringing gas with me so I can test the fuel range. Most people will never get 198 miles from the tank because of wrist twisting and remapping . I think with good habits you should be able to get 150 miles between fill ups . I still say there would be a market for an Interstate 961 , 6 gallon tank , windshield , factory bags and rack , heated grips and comfy seat. The California should be the model used and be named : California Interstate or just Inter for short. Just imagine color matched bags and streamlined designed for the bike. It would be awesome.

Those fuel consumption numbers...as we now like to say....fake news. Ask me how I know. Oh...fuel light didn't come on. I get 39-41 mpg. Ran out once at 140 miles on the dot. I don't thrash the bike from dead stops, but I cruise avg. about 70. Sometimes a little less, sometimes a lot more.

Yea you got it there. If you're playing hard you better gas up at 125 miles !!! I have also run out at 144 miles on the nose . There were many full throttle runs that afternoon though. I have also gotten 167 miles before my low fuel light came on too. BUT 198 miles , at 55 or 60 mph , stock mapping it can do it. Not at 80 mph !!!

All very interesting but where are the all-important grin factor figures?

I can confirm average of 44 mpg with my Cafe Racer and range of 198 mi, but this range you only reach with the alluminum tank definitely not with the OEM tank!

& how many gallons of fuel can u squeeze in that alloy tank Ralphi ?

I think the plastic tank is 3.5 to 3.8 USG . I have never been able to get any more in. Also , when I ran out of gas I could see some gas at the bottom that the pump could not reach . So , 4.5 gals is considerably more especially if one can go 190 miles , pull into a gas station and put in near 4.5 Gals of gas. That is a major improvement ... Is what described here what you can do Raphi ?

YES!
Here is the prove, last time 200 mi with 15 litres.
How many new Nortons have been built?

If I am figuring right you are getting 50 miles to the US Gallon. That is very good ! And you were able to put in 15.02 Liters which is 15.88 Qts which is 3.97 US gallons .!! You were able to pull into a gas station after driving 200 miles , not run out and put in almost 4.0 US Gallons of gas !! I am CONVINCED ... Could someone check my math, this looks correct to me.. Thanks Raphi .

Looking at your chart your best fuel consumption (Imperial) is 61.68mpg and worst was 54.64mpg... not bad. I am still refueling from jerry cans so not had a chance to check my mpg.

200 miles with 15 litres is 60mpg (U.K. gallons).

That is remarkably high.

Have I got my maths wrong?

NOT Bad ? I would call it GREAT Gas mileage !

Sorry guys, I forgot one important detail: since September 2016 I have the 17T front sprocket (one tooth down) on my bike which means that mileage has an offset of plus 10%!
Taking this in account, fuel consumption should be around 45 mpg US or 55 mpg UK.
Thus about 180 mi with 15 litres.
I will have to mount the 19T sprocket for a while to compensate mileage...

When I checked my gas mileage last season I was getting between 43 and 49 mpg US gallons . Depending how I was driving the bike how fast etc.. The real story here is the amount of gas you can put in to the aluminum tank !

Tony, the factory made Norton tank is a work of art and a thing of beauty for sure.

But it does cost £2400...

You could get an after market tank maker to make you a custom tank for less than half that, and have it made any size you want.

Just a thought...

How many new Nortons have been built?
This has been asked before, but there doesn't seem to be any clear answer.
A recent article in Octane Magazine suggested that the new factory had built 6000 units to date. This seems quite a bit higher than previous estimates I've read.
A common consensus seems to be that around 80% are exported.
In the UK, according to 'How Many Left' website, which uses DVLA data, there are apparently registered and SORN'd, ('off road' at the time), 234 Commandos of all flavours and 152 Dommies. Allowing for a certain number to be unregistered/in collections, let's assume the total in UK is around 450. This would mean the total built would be no more than 2500.
That seems quite low....
Except, while I was at the factory last year, they suggested that they were building around 10 bikes per week, say 500 per year. We are aware that at the beginning they were building less than this, 'till production issues were sorted, so it could well be around the 2500 mark.
It's not really important, but it would be nice to know how 'special' we all are and how many people worldwide have exquisite taste in motorcycles, impeccable judgment and a true understanding of motoring art, :D;).
(Or just suckers for a pretty face....).
I'm in love with the whole nostalgic Norton/IoMTT heritage thing and a real sucker for a pretty face. When asked about my SF, I tell folk "It looks great, sounds better, goes like a train and stops like its hit a brick wall, I love it" They don't disagree. I'll achieve my ambition when I ride it on a lap of the TT course later this year. That'll be enough 'special' for me.

Enjoy your lap!

You have an RC51 in the shed too I see. Fabulous bikes those!
